I swear, sometimes I think that space is like a big video game. Where the hardest things to get yield the biggest prize. When will we reach a level where we can mine the diamond planet? Or travel millions of light years in a matter of days to get to far away earth like planets that may not even be there anymore, since we view them from the past because of the speed of light and how far away they are... I love space, but god damnit does it piss me off. When will we finally win the game and figure out some of the hardest questions.. What is space? Where did it come from? And where does it go?..

New Planet – Diamond Planet…..
Astronomers have spotted a planet that seems to be made of diamond. This new planet was found orbiting a tiny star J1719-1438 known as a Pulsar.

Pulsars are dead neutron stars around 20 kilometers in diameter and spin hundreds of times a second, emitting beams of radiation.

The Science journal reports that the planet, which orbits its star every two hours and 10 minutes, has slightly more mass than Jupiter but is 20 times as dense. Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne was quoted, “The evolutionary history and amazing density of the planet all suggest it is comprised of carbon — i.e. a massive diamond orbiting a neutron star every two hours in an orbit so tight it would fit inside our own Sun.”

The planet never got large enough to produce elements heavier than carbon. So once the hydrogen and helium are stripped away, it would reveal a solid carbon core – made of diamond.

how do think the u.s. govt will try to even explore this, when theres no more space program? ya think they would implement it so they can claim it first? of course they will! cmon! its the united states government! greedy fucks they are.....

Not that diamond was ever a rare and precious stone before this discovery, but now it's gotta be worth less than douche water

I love the fact that something like a diamond can cause so much pain and misery.

so it's a carbon planet. more useful as an energy source really. crushed diamonds burn, just like their surface-formed twin, coal.

took the words right out of my mouth.
nasa's budget has been cut big time for some reason. shit makes no sense. space and space exploration should be a huge priority. i agree with abbatoir. the planet would make for a great energy source.

Scientists have recognized the possibility of diamond-rich (as in entire continents made of diamond) moons and planets for a while now. All that's required to create diamond are carbon, pressure and heat, so it's inevitable that such planets and moons exist throughout the universe.

Problem is, any celestial body with the proper conditions to create solid diamond continents or even an entire diamond surface/subsurface is far, far, far too hostile for human beings to harvest that diamond, unless and until we enter an age of insanely advanced super-technology.

So it's as untouchable to us as the surface of any star. Too bad.
