Craig Sorger was a 13-year-old boy from Ephrata, Washington. He was mildly autistic and suffered from mental disabilities. The teenager struggled with school but found enjoyment making friends which was something he was exceptionally good at. His family described him as “goofy” with a sophisticated sense of humour. He loved hot wheels, video games and looking for turtles.
On the 15th of February, 2003, Sorger asked his mother if he could hang out with his two friends - 12-year-old Evan Savoie and 12-year-old Jake Eakin. When he hadn’t returned home by nightfall, Sorger’s mother phoned the boys who told her they had gone home hours ago and that they had no idea as to where Sorger was. Shortly before midnight, the lifeless body of Sorger was discovered in Oasis Park. He had been brutally beaten and stabbed to death with such force that the blade of the knife was embedded in his skull. He sustained 34 stab wounds.
Both Savoie and Eakin denied any involvement in the shocking murder. Savoie even claimed that Sorger had fallen from a tree and died. Eakin eventually led investigators to the murder weapon and claimed that it was Savoie who had killed Sorger, claiming he wanted to go on a killing spree. He confessed that while being attacked by Saovie, who he believed was his friends, Sorger called out: “Why are you doing this to me?”
Evan Savoie was tried as an adult and sentenced to 26 years in prison. Jake Eakin was sentenced to 14 years.
