I wouldn't exactly call roughly 8 percent of your national population a gesture. As for never having a real military, come on dude, are you getting your Canadian facts from South Park?

An' dinna forget 1812: that was the year that the States lost it's first war. The States attacked Canada on 2 major fronts (Niagara and Windsor) without punching a hole in any of the Canadian lines. A great truth of the War of 1812 was when the Americans made an attempt to storm the southern part of Lake Ontario. Two Canadian sentries on duty near the shore, saw the American ship appear and then set anchor. But these two didn't run, instead, they fooled a force of almost 4,000 Americans, already starting to land, into thinking that they were facing a Canadian force 5 times larger than theirs. Within hours, the American ships pulled anchor and sailed back to US waters, never again to enter Canadian waters to try and launch another occupational invasion. Hu-rah!

And nae, Canada participating in WW1 was no just a token gesture. In 1914 Canada was still part of the British Empire: Britain went to war, Canada went to war, as did Australia and other countries.

Canada was one of the youngest countries at the time. A good example is of Canada and the US's populations at the outbreak of WW1.
  • 1914: Canada = 7.8 million
  • 1914 USA = 99.1 million
Canada became fully involved in WW1 at the outset: 1914. The US decided that after a few of their ships were sunk by German U-Boats, that it was time for them to declare war, 3 years after her Allies were already at war: 1917 against the same 'enemy.'

But the Americans soldiers were true "soldiers" at Verdun, the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, Flanders, etc. - the war would have been lost without them. Damn...I forgot...the US wasn't at any of those battles. The US was busy playing baseball while Canadian soldiers were throwing what they could at the Germans along with the British, the French, Russians, etc. Several decisive victories, including Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele, were won by not the British nor the French, but by the Canadians.

Canada earned it's stripes in WW1. But Canada was also there for WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. With Iraq, Canada said "No" to the US but did join them in Afghanistan.

I've frequently found that many Americans, especially deep southern and far western, are taught this notion that Canada is a country of weakness, or Eskimos, or moose...

But I think the States might end up with more than they bargained for if they were to try and invade Canada's shores. Ya, 1812 was a bad US year.

Lols, anyways, I'm hoping to get some more WW1 images uploaded soon - once I go through all of the ones that I have: I don't want to repost myself.

Apologies for the long bla-bla-bla thing...I'm Canadian.

Unfortunately it doesn't hoss. Your gross misinterpretation of history can not be fixed by quoting CURRENT military statistics.

I'm not so sure that numbers matter. Take the US-led invasion of Iraq. After bombing the shit out of the place the US had atleast 150,000 troops on the ground in addition to coalition forces. The Iraqi Army numbered maybe 25,000? How about Afghanistan. The US and coalition forces (does the US ever stage war on it's own?) outnumbered the Taliban forces by 10 to 1, if not way more. And again, that was after the US bombed the shit out of the country.

The main question is did the US actually win in Iraq? Have they won in Afghanistan? So many against so few and most might agree that the US accomplished nothing in either country except lose a few thousand good fighting men and women, along with the losses of coalition forces, and bring about the deaths of hundreds of thousands of dead civilians in both theatres.

Just sayin' :)

That would be a nasty photo. Ear-to-ear ear necklace. Teeth and ears seem to be favorites for different wars. After enduring the fear and anxiety of battle, seeing close friends killed or maimed, killing men themselves, etc. that the 'enemy' ceased to become human beings to the ones who managed to live through another battle.

I have one living Vietnam Vet relative (a Canadian who is now a Catholic priest) and he won't talk about his time there. Mind you he was in the air as a bomber pilot but I'm sure as all did, he say his fair share of wild shit in Vietnam. The other relative committed suicide years ago.

In WW1 I think most kept trophies to things such as weapons, patches, daggers, etc.

IT IS WHAT IT IS FACE IT THEY COULDNT FIGHT THERE WAY OUT OF A WET PAPER BAG WITH WHAT THEY HAVE......THEY REALLY DONT HAVE A STANDING ARMY...

The main question is did the US actually win in Iraq
YES THE OBJECT WAS TO GET RID OF SADDAM THAT WAS IT... IN THAT RESPECT WE WON....

AS FAR AS LOSSES CIVI LOSSES WERE LESS THAN EXPECTED AS THEY DIDNT USE HUMAN SHIELDS AS MUCH AS WE THOUGHT THEY WOULD....

DeathHand, set 82 photo 2, is that WW1? That truck chassis looks a little more modern, especially the tires and axles. b2ux, you are giving us southerners a bad rep. Go read some history from books, not just fact blurbs gleaned from google searches. Then, you will realize how utterly asinine this statement is.

Canadians are more reserved and because our Forces are not that large, we are not going to throw them all into a war that was fruitless to begin with. We train, equip, and train more. Canada doesn't want to own the world and our military is right where it belongs: in Canada.

The main question is did the US actually win in Iraq
YES THE OBJECT WAS TO GET RID OF SADDAM THAT WAS IT... IN THAT RESPECT WE WON....

Several thousand lives lost (US and coalition military) for one man who was once a friend and guest with the White House? The States doesn't gather up 150,000 of it's own troops, including air force and navy, to get one man. And once that one man was found the States remained in Iraq and still, 5 or 6 years later, trying to get out. No military objective was gained except for leaving Iraq in complete shambles.

If not for the coalition forces that joined, the States would have lasted 6 months in Iraq on it's own. The idea of war to the States is nothing but politics, loose allegiances with other countries and flexing muscle.

Canada is akin to Scotland: not a massive force but a formidable one that knows how to get in and out of a wet paper bag.
