MotoGP Silly Season Update
by dean adams
Thursday, May 12, 2016

Five races down and the MotoGP silly season rages on.

Right now, this is where the seats vs asses ratio, um, sits:

Ducati: They have signed Jorge Lorenzo to a big money two year deal. His teammate for 2017 and beyond? The guy in red says it will be the rider who does the least amount of idiotic things while being at the same time very fast. Take your pick.

Honda: HRC is going to re-sign both Pedrosa and Marc Marquez. Yamaha thinks that if they don't sign Maverick that they will get Dani Pedrosa.

Suzuki: Maverick's current contract gives Suzuki right of first refusal on any offers he may receive from Yamaha, etc. What's Maverick mulling over then? Probably how many world championships Kevin Schwantz would have won had he signed with Yamaha in 1989, as he had opportunity to do.

Suzuki's second rider? Maybe Aleix Espargaro gets to keep his ride. Maybe Andrea Iannone gets slotted in there.

Yamaha: Rossi would probably like to be the lone alpha male in the factory Yamaha garage. So maybe Maverick gets the "teammate" ride, or maybe it will be someone else who is less alpha than Rossi that gets the teammate role. Dani Pedrosa? Sure. But ...has the factory Yamaha team ever had one relatively gigantic ( as in normal human male) sized rider and then one really short and light rider? This will be entertaining.

Tech 3 Yamaha: Smith was gone to KTM before nearly the first race of the 2016 season. Pol? It seems a little like torture or maybe punishment but Pol Espargaro probably gets to stay. Or Pol gets any number of the other open slots. Ducati? Maybe. Suzuki? Maybe.

LCR: has the almost guaranteed to be a success Cal Crutchlow move to Honda and LCR been an almost guaranteed success? Not really. Can Cal go back to his "PlayStation" M1 at Tech 3? Not really.

LCR has an option on Cal for 2017. It's been rumored since Austin that Dorna is pushing LCR into being the satellite Suzuki team next year. So if that happens and Cal stays he can claim to have ridden on every manufacturer's bike in MotoGP save the Aprilia.

Aprilia: With Sam Lowes signed already Aprilia will get whoever they can get to ride their second bike. It would be an exciting change for Aprilia to get a rider who has actually won a MotoGP race to help develop their MotoGP bike because test rider Alex Hoffmann, nor Bautista nor Bradl can't really say what it's going to take to win because they have not won in MotoGP.

So maybe Dovi.

Marc VDS Honda: Did you happen to see the excellent BT pre-race telecast from Jerez? There, on the grid, ex-racer turned color commentator Neil Hodgson interviewed a MVDS exec and asked him, basically, why the team sucks so bad. After the VDS guy spoke, the camera showed Hodgson's face. Let us tell you what (we think) Hodgson was thinking: "FAN TEAM".

It's basic fan team logic that the only thing that can save the Marc VDS team now is Cal Crutchlow.

Kawasaki Racing Team honours championship at Donington Park.

Fresh from claiming his eighth-straight World Superbike race victory at Donington Park, Kawasaki Racing Team surprised Tom Sykes with the presentation of his 2013 title-winning ZX-10R on Sunday.

In the season where Sykes and the Ninja took 18 podium places including nine race wins and eight Superpoles, the Yorkshireman amassed an unassailable 447 points on a machine which could trace its roots back to 2011.

“Wow, what a fantastic surprise, this really is the icing on the cake of an amazing weekend,” Sykes said. There has been a lot of hard work put into this bike by countless people and companies. I feel honoured to now be trusted to look after her. I am not sure if my wife Amie will allow me to keep the bike in the house, but let’s see shall we!”

Developed into a championship-winning machine thanks to KHI, KRT and the many technical sponsor partners of the racing project, the final part of the jig-saw was the formidable partnership between Sykes and crew chief Marcel Duinker.

Together the duo not only created the platform for success, but laid the foundations for the machine which now stands as the current Superbike benchmark, the 2016 Ninja ZX-10R.

“On behalf of KHI, KRT and the many technical sponsors who were part of creating this historic machine we were delighted to pass this title winner over to Tom in recognition of not just his amazing 2013 championship season, but also his ongoing commitment and success on Kawasaki Ninja machinery,” explained as Biel Roda of KRT.

Previously on display at various shows and events across Europe and then in secure storage at the KRT workshops in Barcelona, the UK round of WorldSBK was seen as the most fitting location for the presentation.
