A woman charged with the murder of her four-year-old son allegedly cooked parts of his arm before turning herself into police on the NSW Central Coast.
About 4.40pm on Saturday the 32-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, entered Wyong Police Station where police were prompted to conduct a welfare check shortly after at her unit in Wyong.

Later on Saturday, police were granted an interim order allowing them to carry out a forensic procedure on the woman after she allegedly told police she had eaten parts of her son before the discovery of his dismembered remains by investigators at the unit.

The court granted the interim order allowing a professional to collect a buccal cheek swab, blood sample and “sample (such as a nail clipping) of a suspect’s nails or of other matter from under the suspect’s nails”.

The order states that the carrying out of the forensic procedure was “not for the purpose of obtaining suspect DNA”.

It’s believed the woman has a combination of mental health and drug addiction issues, she had minimal contact with the court justice system in recent years. Sources confirmed the mother allegedly cooked parts of his arm.

The woman was charged with one count of murder and faced acting Judge Leslie Brennan on Sunday where she was formally refused bail. She is due to next appear in court on September 1.

NSW Communities and Families Kate Washington on Monday confirmed the Department of Communities and Justice had previously had contact with the family.

“What is the case with nearly all families that come into contact with the child protection system is that they are complex and there are interactions with various systems, including the family court,” she said. “So there are a number of elements to this that we have been trying to get more information on.”

She announced an independent review into the boy’s death.

“The purpose of the review, is to understand exactly what happened, what decisions were made, when and if they were adequate,” she said.

Officers attending the pair’s family home on Saturday were met with an “extremely confronting” scene when discovering the body of 4-year-old who had been “deceased for some time” and had suffered significant arm and leg injuries.

A crime scene was established at the home, nestled within the quiet seaside suburb around an hour-and-half drive north of Sydney, and State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad was called in to commence investigations.

Superintendent Chad Gillies, Tuggerah Lakes Police District Commander, said on Sunday: “My priority at the moment now is to work through the investigation with detectives to understand exactly what happened and why it happened, and importantly, as well, providing welfare to all the police that attended last night and through the investigation.”

“Whenever a child is (an alleged) victim of violent crime and whenever a child is (allegedly) murdered, it strikes at the core of community. That’s why it’s absolutely important we work through this methodically, we try to understand what’s happened, why it happened,” he said.

“From my perspective, we owe that to that little boy to make sure that we get the exact circumstances and present them to the court in due course, and that is the focus over the coming days and weeks for investigators.”
