Key points:

  • A teenage boy is dead after being thrown from the tray of a utility vehicle on Thursday afternoon
  • The incident happened in the remote Northern Territory community of Palumpa
  • Police are urging the public for information on the whereabouts of the driver, who allegedly left the scene

Police and CareFlight attended the incident in Palumpa, 360 kilometres south-west of Darwin.
Authorities say a second passenger in the vehicle was being assessed by local clinic staff and CareFlight.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said detectives from the NT Police's major crash unit were travelling to Palumpa to commence an investigation.
He said police were seeking any information about the whereabouts of a man who was reportedly behind the wheel when the incident happened.
"Our thoughts are with the community and family involved," he said.
Speaking on ABC Radio Darwin this morning, Darwin watch commander Meacham King said the ute had been travelling to the community's airstrip when the incident unfolded.
There have now been 52 deaths on NT roads this year, compared to 35 in 2021, representing a nearly 50 per cent increase.
Detective Lindner reiterated calls for motorists to drive safely and to conditions.
It comes as wet weather continues to bear down on much of the Northern Territory associated with ex-Tropical Cyclone Ellie and the monsoon.
