EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio (WTOV) — A Dairy Queen employee in East Liverpool was reportedly assaulted by an angry customer, prompting a police response, and ultimately an arrest.

"It happened around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the DQ on West Eighth Street. Employees said the suspect had waited a while for his food due to a shift change. Instead of calmly reminding staff, they said he became aggressive.

"He went inside, had some words back-and-forth, and decided that wasn’t good enough," said East Liverpool Police Chief John Lane. “He went around the counter and assaulted the female that was in the back preparing the food.”

Workers said the female employee tried to de-escalate the situation, but the man’s temper only grew.

"In retaliation, he started screaming," said employee Ariona Nelson. “You don’t have to get violent. We are trying to help you out. Then, bickering was happening, and then eventually he came back there and assaulted her."
The man then left the scene. Police had to turn to the public for help, posting surveillance images on the East Liverpool Police Department’s Facebook page. He was later identified as James Wicker, of Wellsville.

"People are people and things are going happen,” said Rian Wehrhan, the employee and victim. “It’s just another day. It’s a lot getting punched in the face, anyway. As you can see, my jaw is still really swollen and it’s started to bruise a little bit. It'll be a big bruise."

A co-worker stepped in to stop the attack, striking Wicker. Wehrhan also attempted to take the attacker down.

"I just didn’t want anyone else to get hit,” Wehrhan said. “You know, we’re in a kitchen. There are knives. There is hot grease. Somebody could have had a gun. We never know. I didn’t want anything to escalate, so I just said, 'You’re going to sleep.'"

Wicker is being charged with one count of assault. He was out on bond and a court date was pending.
