Brazilian police are investigating the barbaric murder of a 5-year-old child whose mother allegedly beat her to death, removed her eyeballs and part of her tongue and then tried to eat the child’s organs in an apparent psychotic episode this week, according to local authorities and multiple news reports.
The mentally disturbed suspect was arrested Sunday after cops arrived at the scene and found her praying next to the victim’s dead body, police in the northeastern state of Alagoas said in a news release. The woman had reportedly used a pair of scissors to cut her child’s organs inside the family’s bathroom before trying to swallow them.
She later told authorities that the child was possessed by a demon, adding that it was the demon who died and not her daughter, according to local news outlet Folha de Alagoas.
Police said the investigation is in the early stages, but they believe the woman was having a severe psychotic episode when she attacked her own child.
Local media identified the suspect as 30-year-old Josimare Gomes da Silva and the victim as Brenda Carollyne da Silva.
Police told reporters that it was the child’s grandfather who called for help after the suspect locked herself in the bathroom with the girl. When cops arrived, the victim was already dead with parts of her organs next to her, Piauí Hoje reported. Authorities also found blood running from a drain behind the house while surveying the gruesome scene, according to the report.
The suspect was later taken to a hospital for treatment as prosecutors continue to investigate the case and determine the charges against her.
The incident happened Sunday evening in the rural town of Maravilha, about 150 miles west of the coastal city of Maceió.
