Police Dude pointed a fake gun at the cops and got put down

Albuquerque, New Mexico — On July 4, 2025, at about 12:20 p.m., Albuquerque Police Officers were called to a house on the 2100 block of South Branch Drive SW, responding to a call by 21-year-old Jerry Baldonado, who asked them to help with a family dispute, and that his brother had a gun the day before. As Officer Dominic Sanchez approached the house and announced twice that he was a police officer, Baldonado opened the front door and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at Sanchez. Though the weapon turned out to be an airsoft BB gun, Sanchez, believing it to be a real threat, fired three rounds, striking Baldonado in the arm, leg, and abdomen. Bodycam footage later showed Baldonado smiling and switching the replica between hands before being shot, while a woman inside the home shouted that the gun was a toy, though officers said they did not hear her warning. Baldonado, who has a documented history of developmental disabilities and prior police encounters, remains hospitalized as he recovers from his injuries. Baldonado had previously made erratic 911 calls, including one falsely claiming he’d been shot. The shooting remains under internal and multi-agency investigation to determine whether department policies were followed and whether any criminal charges are appropriate.
