You just don't understand. Fire will be afraid to get dirt in its face, so it won't go through the hole to spread everywhere. Clever and effective!
To be fair I can see why they prefer to toss dirt at the wall instead of wasting the little water they have, especially when burning house is beyond saving at this point.

I was going to ask why they didn't just shovel through the windows, but it looks like the only way to reach the shiny hurty yellow stuff, was to blow a hole through the wall beside it.
