Counter terrorism police have gained approval to have five terror suspects extradited to Melbourne to appear in court this Thursday.

The five men who allegedly planned to get to Indonesia by boat so they could join ISIL in Syria faced court in Cairns today.

The men, who are all from Melbourne and aged between 21 and 31, have each been charged with one count of making preparations for incursions into foreign countries to engage in hostile activities.

They face a maximum penalty of life in jail if found guilty.

The men, including Islamic preacher Musa Cerantonio, were charged late Saturday night after spending five days in custody following their arrest near Cairns towing a seven-metre fishing boat en route to Cape York in far North Queensland.

Palmer River locals mocked the suspects' mission, an apparent extremists' journey into the wilds of Far North Queensland.

John Griffin said: "Yeah, just no idea what this country is like. They have no idea what they were letting themselves in for."

Coast guard Peter Graham added: "On so many fronts these guys were never going to get there."
