A rare flesh-eating sexually transmitted disease appears to be making a comeback.

A British woman contracted Donovanosis in the United Kingdom, the Lancashire Postreported. The woman is reported to be between the ages of 15 and 25 and contracted the disease sometime within the last 12 months.

Donovanosis, which also is known as granuloma inguinale, usually is found in tropical regions, including parts of the Caribbean and southern Africa, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It is rarely found in the United States, the CDC says.

If left untreated, the disease can cause flesh-eating genital ulcers that spread and grow.

The disease typically is spread through sexual intercourse with someone who has contracted it. But the disease also can be spread by coming in contact with an infected ulcer.

Antibiotics can treat the disease, but the CDC warns that relapse can occur within six to 18 months after effective therapy.
