When you talk about your gardens, I imagine them to be lovely and tranquil.

The owls would absolutely do away with the eggs or small eaglets should they ever get control, which would be very difficult to do in this particular nest. They'd have to hurt M so he couldn't fly and then try to get through Harriet as she sits on the eggs. I've seen her defend a couple times when another eagle has been brave enough to land on the nest while she's been incubating. She is fierce and will fight to the death. An owl wouldn't have a chance against her, or M for that matter.

Parasitic birds are an interesting bunch, as well as the birds they try to trick. Both sides have worked on ways to out maneuver the other. In some instances, the parasitic somehow has evolved egg shells that mimic the hosts, while the host will change up how they build a nest making an opening too small to enter. Some hosts have even developed a gang type sense, in that they have look outs watching and will attack as a group the parasitic. Both sides have even evolved where their feathers mimic the other in an effort to out game the opponent.
Nature, tis very interesting stuff.

It's still a quiet area here and the place was grandmothers farm after she fled from the east with her kids. She did mostly wood business and a bit here and there, not a big thing but ran well for a long time. Later my mother left the garden and property quite natural, gardening is done only for a minimum until today. Often by me, for the heavy things like climbing on trees we have someone.
A lot of small animals here and the neighbours have sometimes deers and cows on their enclosures.
But they're building everywhere... our neighbour who has a very old and beautiful house with horse stables/animal pension got three damn big administration buildings from an insurance placed directly beside his property! Nobodfy knows exactly how they managed to get the approval for that. Looks great.. not!
And there's a new highway nearby and two miles away is an airport. Though one of the greener places in this totally overcrowded part of the country.
Here is a Google view how it looks here around:

SonofaBITCH!!! BAD OWL, very VERY BAD...
2nd night in a row, M gets knocked from the attic branch. This one was hard enough to be heard on all cams.

This picture gives a good visual of how deep the nest is, as well as the "bowl" where the eggs are.
Harriet is standing on top of the nest or "crib rails", M is standing in the nest, and the eggs are even deeper in the bowl.
At 5'8", I could stand in the middle and not be able to see out. These two make a perfect nest, everytime.

That's a lot.. would be around 170 cm. I'm 180!
What do you think is the diameter of the nest?
It's very deep, M likes those nest walls tall. Hence the reason he's called the Stick Man, lol.
I would say the diameter is at least 7ft, maybe even closer to 8, each season it seems to get bigger. They have another nest in their territory that they also defend. It's not a breeding nest(so far) and not nearly as big as the castle.

Harriet and M both have a wing span of 6 to 6.5 ft, Harriet's being longer because females are larger. When they land or get ready to take flight their wing tips easily reach side to side. Also just for the info, they both stand at roughly 3ft tall and those eggs that look so tiny are the size of baseballs.

I expect these eggs to hatch much closer together in time, than their laid dates. Harriet and M are really good at delayed incubation. This will help with the bobble heads bonking each other, as they'll both be the same size. Plus M tends to cover the more aggressive goober with grass if the feedings get too wild. Mom and Dad will tandem feed as well, which solves the rumbles in the bowl completely. Sometimes they're fun to watch, sometimes they can be brutal. Thankfully the food source is plentiful, and they grow outta that stage quickly.

Harriet is incubating, M brings grasses. He wants her to move, he wants his turn.
11321ma.jpg

She doesn't want to move, cause she bossy and stubborn... so he stands on her.
LOL
11321mb.jpg

She moves and pushes him backwards and he flaps to keep his balance. They are too funny.
11321hd.jpg

That wing span I mentioned, reaching side to side....

Well this is new, a quick night shift?

2:00 a.m.
M with soft vocals drops to the nest, seems he wants to incubate.
114202a.jpg

Harriet doesn't want to move, so he gives her back feathers a little tug.
114203a.jpg

And she's up... he's in and down.

She doesn't go far...
Stretches her wings and does a nice rouse.
114208.jpg

Maybe 15 minutes later she wants her spot back, which M doesn't want to give up. So she puts grass on him and sorta stands on him, then picks at his head feathers... LOL
114215a.jpg

He stands, backs away and she's in and down. When they move off of the eggs, they always step backwards so they can see where they're putting those 2 inch talons. Foot placement is important.

114215b.jpg

They are so playful with each other, amazing.

This was a week ago. The owl went after Harriet. She gave chase once she righted herself.

The owls have knocked M out of the tree for 4 nights in a row now. Poor M, he's taking a beating but so far hasn't been injured. Thank God.

@McM, this link is to all 3 cams in the pasture, and a 360° cam that you can control. There is other info on this site too... nest activity, videos and a chat. The chat is usually twice a day( 2 and 6ish), w/great mods that are full of eagle knowledge. You can read along with the chat without having to log in, which I like.
The Pritchetts own the land that comprise Harriet's territory and are the family that so graciously have shared this nest with the world. It's part real estate, part working stables and part eagle preserve.
Enjoy :)

That's nice, Dev, to have the camera's address now. :hatsoff:Thank you.
The owls are really a damn resolute bunch.. just read in the chat the eagles can't see well at night so they can't grab the owls either. And they are reluctant because they don't want to get in danger too, they have to care for the eggs, etc. Smart behaviour, I hope it goes all well for them.
I'm still baffled about these owls, attacking eagles to steal the nest. Unbelievable somehow.

You're very welcome, I figured you'd like the original sites perks.
Those damned owls... true, eagles can't see well at night thus making any solid defense in flight very dangerous for them. They can't hear or see them coming until it's too late and the owls can see them perfectly in the dark. Now, if they happen to catch those owls, they will kill it quickly, an owl is no match for an eagle. All it would take is one good grip with those talons and the owl would be done. Eagles and GHO's do not like each other. Both pairs are sharing territory and nesting seasons. The owls want that nest, because they're thieves that don't build their own. I'm sure that H and M know where they rest during the day and have done their share of intimidating and fly bys.

Ahh.. that would have been my next questions. ;) Do they know each other and is it always the same pair of owls.

Edit: Just read the owl is called Uhu here, Virginia Uhu, exactly. Spoken 'oohoo'.

PIP WATCH IS ON

Any time we should see a PIP. There's an air pocket at the larger more rounded end of the eggs that supplies the chicks with air in the last day or so before they make their exit. That first crack, is called the PIP.

Tired Harriet, sleeps while she can. The clock is running, come on babies!!!

M15 with his head titled a bit listening to at least one of the babes chirping in there. If the other isn't peep peeping away, they will be very soon.

The owls have been relentless. They've attacked M15 every night, knocking him out of the tree with some solid hits. He's remained uninjured and gets right back up on the branch and stands watch over his family. Damned owls, go away.

Busy in the pine today.
Hmmm... looks like a PIP.
Have to wait for a good look and confirmation.
That's M, btw.

An eagle tried to land in the castle. Harriet was on the attic branch and went after it, escorting it out of their territory.
Here is M in defense mode standing over his babes tracking it, wings spread and alerting.
