This one is pretty unique to me but what I never realised was the distance they had to travel to hit land! I thought they were pretty close but they are miles from land.

Imagine the shit going through your mind when you've got so long to travel, I bet not many conversations were had on those transport boats.

Then they had a long beach at low tide ( 100 yards ) to run when they got there.

The landing was successful because although the Germans had already guessed that a landing would soon follow somewhere, they just didn't know where
Omaha Beach was not prepared for such a large defense mechanism from the German side, but still 4,414 died and 10,000+ were wounded

So, we managed to take the beach because the Americans arrived with a significant force anyway, but the US Air Force had bombed the beach in the wrong place the day before, so there was hardly any cover for the American foot soldiers

The German troops at those beaches were mostly troops allied to Germany from countries taken over by the Nazis like Russians, Poles, Czechs etc who thought fighting on the winning side was the go, until it went tits up. They gave up when the allied troops started to take positions, didn't help them.

Czechs and Poles were german allies at some point but were never in the western front....you just crashed on the first turn with that statement.

Of course, the more than 4,000 dead Americans and the more than 10,000 injured were largely due to the MG42s, but let's not forget that the landing on the American side took place with a large overpower against the Germans, the 185 M4 Sherman tanks were left out of the scene, which also participated in the American D-Day landings
I didn't want to stand up to the MG42: a weapon with tremendous firepower that, even if it doesn't kill you, which is highly likely, it will still tear your hands and feet off because the caliber is very high and the firepower is very fast
The Germans continued to use it under the name MG3, but they bought it later on from the fire of rate and the caliber is different
This machine gun became one of the most successfully created machine guns in the world, but today it has been replaced by the MG4
Although in the movie, when Hanks starts shooting the Tiger tank with a 1911, I don't see much sense.

I'm surprised you didn't know this coming from Europe, I knew this as a kid in the 60's (that old), this was when WW2 history was gotten from those that were actually there (and I've spoken to a lot of WW2 vets) not some faggot who did a doctrine years later on the subject & changed the facts because they didn't like them. Maybe you don't know as much as you think you do, in fact, I'm sure of it.
