Frozen Waves

Due to the "polar vortex" that has hit the US this winter, Lake Superior in the Great Lakes has frozen. Lake Superior is north of Wisconsin and Minnesota and south of Canada. At Bayfield, there is an archipelago of islands called the Apostle Islands. They are accessible only by kayak by skilled paddlers during days when conditions are ideal. Lake Superior is notoriously cold, choppy, stormy and dangerous.

Due to the -30 to -65 F temperatures and winds, the waters and have frozen, revealing the sea caves within the Apostle Islands.

I am an avid kayaker and have been through this archipelago. The caves are breathtaking and the lake is truly no joke. Falling out of your kayak can result in death by hypothermia in minutes, even in the high summer. For this reason it's recommended to wear a wet or dry suit and always wear a PFD and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. I am from the Gulf Coast and spent years and years out in the Gulf of Mexico, but nothing could prepare me for this.

Enjoy.
