They're talking about sending 1200 soldiers to support the fight against the Syrian terrorists this year.
Would be only a mandat for the airforce (reconnaissance only) and some ships.

"From a military point of view, around 1,200 soldiers would be necessary to run the planes and ship," army chief of staff General Volker Wieker told 'Bild am Sonntag' newspaper, adding that the mission would begin "very quickly once a mandate is obtained".

"The government is seeking a mandate this year," said Wieker.

Berlin on Thursday offered France Tornado reconnaissance jets, a naval frigate, aerial refuelling and satellite images in the fight against the IS group.

Between four and six Tornados would be deployed to deliver images of the ground, even in poor weather and during the night, Wieker said.

Asked why Germany had shied away from participating in direct air strikes, Wieker said the coalition already had "sufficient forces and means" dealing with that aspect of the battle.

"What is needed is reconnaissance on the ground, so that these forces can be deployed effectively. Our Tornados can contribute a lot in that area," he said.

Germany to send 1,200 troops to aid ISIS fight

We'll see..

But on the news they said that the soldiers are only going there to observe not fight.

Yes that's right.
They want to send 4 to 6 'Tornados' and a fregate. The 1200 soldiers are the personnel to run this stuff. They're no fighting troops on the ground, it's only reconnaissance.

To send real armed troops, that's a big political issue here.
Leftists: Booo Hitler
Rightwing: Kill 'em all
The army: We can't, it's all fucked up
Merkel: Maybe it's enough we pay some money to the NATO.

I'll bet that most NATO countries are dying to do just that. But the politicking and red tape around a task like that would take forever: governing parties need cabinet approval, support of their people, the money, equipment and all that good shit. They also all need a strategy so that any coalition is working together and they can only do that if there is a Centralized Command in place - who would be in charge?

Currently we have Russia, the USA, Canada, Britain, France, etc. running fighter jet sorties against ISIS. But boots on the ground (Americans and Canadians have already been there and have seen combat - in small numbers) is a whole different story.

If ground troops are sent in from different Nato-allied countries ISIS would be quickly decimated and cease to openly exist in Iraq and Syria. But then what? ISIS fighters are already all over the world, either openly fighting one government or another, or with well planted sleeper cells that wait for orders.

It's probably time that the Arab nations stepped up to bat against ISIS: they probably understand ISIS far better than any western/euro country. ISIS is willing to die for their dream of the caliphate but are other countries willing to send in their troops that are willing to die to stop them?

This whole ISIS mess can be likened to an apartment building that's infested with cock roaches: spray every apartment, squish 'em, set traps, kill them all. Yet they are in the floors, the ceilings, the walls, the plumbing, the electrical units, the apartment next door waiting until the shitstorm blows over - all one can really do is try to keep them out of their own apartment.

Just thoughts :)

When you put it like that, it's actually a big undertaking. Countries have to follow the rules but yet the terrorists can do as they please. Yes it's actually up to their home countries to put an end to it. It's actually scary as hell, these guys are prepared to offer their lives up for what they believe in, like the Ultimate super soldiers not scared of dying. They are on a mission to destabilize the whole world and so far they are unstoppable.
