4. It seems that most who perished were consumed by the fire that broke out. Officials were using DNA to ID those victims.

The state of all the grafiti on those carrages.
Ya, seriously eh? Where I live (Canada) the graffiti is on the freight cars...not the passenger trains. So we tend to not ride on the freight trains cause that graffiti is some bad luck shit and they'll probably crash and burn. On passenger carriages, the luck is even worse...except for in Scotland. Our train was graffiti-free and a storm hit and we nailed a tree that fell on the tracks and just about derailed...and I lived...

was he high on cocaine?

It's far worse than that.

The 59-year-old station master, who assumed duty in the position only 40 days ago, after a year’s training, is considered responsible for the movement of the trains that ended up on the same track heading in opposite directions.

According to reports, the station master allegedly claimed that he gave an order for the trains to change track but it was not implemented by the system.

“Nothing works, everything is done manually. We are ‘in manual mode’ throughout the Athens-Thessaloniki network,” he said, emphasizing that neither the indicators, the traffic lights, nor the electronic traffic control is working.

When in Athens the station master gives the green light to move to the next station. This procedure is done at approximately 15 points on the route from Athens to Thessaloniki because no telemonitoring, or photo-signaling system is working, he said.

“The train drivers take orders and wherever they take us, we go.”

He added that in the past electronic systems worked and the responsibilities should be sought by the authorities. “We constantly protest,” Genidounias added.

The entire system is completely outdated, everything operates on manual, and they had put an unqualified old man to operate it, probably because he is a friend of some politician. An automated system was bought in 2000 and for some reason it's installation has been postponed by every single government. Many syndicalists had warned the government that this was going to happen eventually.
