The "Awakening" is a large group of Sunni fighters in Iraq that had previously fought against US and Iraqi forces in Anbar Province. They eventually allied themselves with US forces and began to fight al-Qaeda.
Today, the Sunni organization is often referred to as "The Awakening Council/s" and their numbers have been pegged at being over 100,000.
