Back in June of 2014, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) overtook the Iraqi city of Mosul and made it their base of operations. ISIL attacked with a force of about 1,500 fighters and defeated the Iraqi Army, which had 30,000 soldiers as well as 30,000 Federal Police in the city, in just 4 days. Two years later, in January 2015, the Kurdish Peshmerga moved on Mosul, backed by US and Canadian air strikes and the Iraqi Army. By 2017, Mosul was declared free of ISIL...but not hundreds of their nasty corpses.
