Death of rebel who caught Gaddafi stokes Libya tensions

Released - Sept. 26/12

MISRATA, Libya (Reuters) - One of the Libyan rebels who helped capture Muammar Gaddafi in a drain pipe was buried early on Wednesday after his relatives said he had been shot and tortured in a rival town.

The death of Omran Shaban on Monday again highlighted the struggle of Libya's new leaders to rein in armed groups and could further stoke tensions between the towns of Misrata and Bani Walid, which backed opposing sides in the 2011 conflict.

Shaban shot to fame when he was seen in pictures grabbing Gaddafi on October 20. before the former Libyan leader was killed in his home town of Sirte.

According to his relatives, Shaban was kidnapped by armed men in July close to Bani Walid while on his way back to Misrata after he had been on government business in western Libya to calm clashes there. Bani Walid, a former Gaddafi stronghold, lies some 140 km (90 miles) from Misrata.

"He was kidnapped on his way back by some criminal group," his brother Walid said. "The lower part of his body had gunshot wounds and he was tortured."

Shaban was freed earlier this month after mediation efforts by Mohammed Magarief, leader of the ruling national congress. But he was in critical condition and died in Paris on Monday.

While Misrata spent weeks under siege by Gaddafi's forces during last year's fighting, Bani Walid was one of the last towns to fall to the rebels.

The renewed tensions between Misrata and Bani Walid come at a difficult time for Libyan leaders, trying to impose order on armed groups after the killing of the U.S. ambassador in a fatal assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on September 11.

Hundreds attended funeral prayers for Shaban in a Misrata football stadium.

His brother Hussein complained that the Libyan authorities did nothing to help Shaban.

"Libya was declared liberated of Gaddafi's rule on October 23 last year. It isn't," he said.

The national congress has ordered the defence and interior ministries to find those who abducted Shaban, calling him a "brave hero".

In July, fighters from Misrata threatened to attack Bani Walid after two journalists from their town were detained there. The journalists were eventually released after mediation by the authorities.

Libya before Gaddafi was a bunch of tribes often at war with each other. It comes as no surprise that after the fall of the dictator they are back at it.

Yep, Gaddafi ruled the country with an iron fist, much like Saddam from Iraq. But much like after the death of Saddam and "liberation" of Iraq, Libya also is almost in civil war after the death of Gaddafi and the "liberation" of Libya.

Should we have democracy in the USA when so many citizens of the USA actually think that bringing down Saddam and Gaddafi were good, just and right things to do? I think not.

More than one person at my work actually thinks that we should keep troops in Iraq, Libya & Afghanistan. They also think that we should invade more countries in the Middle East and keep soldiers there as well. Not just for a while either, they think that we should just keep them there forever. They think someone that this will stop terrorism... Should these people actually have a vote?...

What are you advocating? not having democracy? DO we live in a democracy?
As i said in another thread: those voting machines are not to be trusted.
The truth is much more sinister then even conspiracy fans come up with.
The U.S.A controls 87 % of the worlds arms trade, as such it has an invested interest in war.
Afghanistan, a country that never in it's history been conqured -and not for lack of many trying- was a big fat mistake for witch many people died and a few profit.
Iraq, A lot of taxpayers money was lost, generations will pay for these wars. Somewhere down the line it must serve somebody's interest.
One glance at the history books will tell you that civilisations and empire's come and go, in folly.
Libya, why bother?

With our all-knowing Western standards, our governments were able to justify the attack on Iraq and it's brutal, blood thirsty dictator - Saddam. Even though the States had armed and befriended the same man and his army when Iraq went to war with Iran, Iraq suddenly became a disease that had to be stamped out.

The job of the politicians (American and British) was to use their nations sense of "democracy." This tyrant in Iraq was dubbed as killing thousands of people, torturing them, and, he had WOMD. They were reminded of 9/11. Citizens in the States and Britain rose up and said, "Yes, Mr. Bush, we are with you." The sense of 'democracy' gave Bush all he needed to move forward and invade Iraq. The British and a few other nations, democratic ones, followed suit - although their people didn't support it.

Canada is also a democratic nation. But even with all of the fear-mongering about Saddam the people here told our politicians, "No, we are not in agreement with this." That is democracy. And Canada let the States know that they were not going to be joining them on this invasion of Iraq - based on the voice of the people, along with our politicians being very skeptical of the whole operation. Bush was pissed, the Americans were pissed. Britain just kinda kept quiet.

And now the Americans and Brits are trying to figure out how the hell to get out of there without the country falling into total anarchy. Maybe Saddam was a tyrant by our western standards, but he held that country together and he kept the population in check. But western democracy ended any control of Iraq's people and the various religious factions beyond repair.

Afghanistan is another story but will suffer the same fate: the west leaves and the Taliban just move back in.

The same thing is happening in Libya. The US and Britain suddenly turned on Gaddafi and as joint forces helped destroy his dictatorship by arming and backing up the rebels with weapons and massive airstrikes. Now, Libya is on the verge of falling apart. And they don't like the West - US or Brits - anymore than they did before Gaddafi fell.

I can't understand anyone actually still supporting US or western involvement in bringing down the governments of other nations and continuing "the fight." There was no fight to begin with. But those that do support it all, still have a say and a vote, which can override those that don't agree with it. Because these people used their democratic rights we now have thousands of young American, British, French, German, Canadian, etc. soldiers laying in their graves. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of dead in Iraq, Libya, etc.

The folly of democracy is no different than an election vote: how many for, how many against. In the states it seems that the "for" votes abolish all "against" votes. With our knowledge of the French, the Germans, the Romans, the British, and all warring countries in the past - we will never learn to just say "no" and simply worry about keeping our own backyards clean.

Both Gaddafi and Saddam, though they both had treated some of their people's badly, were IMO ideal pawn's in the middle east. The threat of Hussein unleashing on any of his neighbor's I think actually kept a relative calm on the peninsula and surround's. Disregarding the Israel/Palestine problem. The only threat really was another flare up between Iran and Iraq. But, now we have this Arab spring thingy happening, Gaddafi's gone, Hussein and Mubarak, gone, Assad under siege, all because it seemed wise initially by Western society to step in. Should've just stopped at Afghanistan and not waited for 9/11 before we went there IMO.
