Let It All Bleed Out
There's a news thread (in the News section) for this story at this LINK that was started by matamuertos.

As most folks know, a Malaysia Boeing 777 passenger airliner, Flight 17, was shot down over the eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014 killing all 290 passengers and crew on board.

After breaking up at about 33,000 ft in the air most of the plane and it's passengers came crashing down onto a sleepy little village called Grabovo, in the rebel stronghold of Donetsk in the East Ukraine.

Apologies if I post the same or similar photos that others have posted in the News section.

As Russia and the Ukraine exchanged words of blame, it became clear to many aviation and ballistic experts that the Malaysia airliner had been brought down by a missile that was probably fired from a BUK missile launcher.

Developed by the Russians back in the 1970's, several countries, including the Ukraine, have BUK missile launchers. Many feel that the pro-Russian separatists in the Ukraine had atleast 1 of these rocket launchers, that had been supplied to them from Russia.

The general consensus is that a BUK launcher on Ukraine soil had fired on the Malaysia airliner by pro-Russians.

Flight MH17 was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet and cruising along at a speed of atleast 550 mph.

Once it was hit by a missile the jet would have continued at the speed long past the impact point until it began to slow down, break apart and begin to fall to the earth.

Wreckage, debris, passenger belongings, bodies and body parts were scattered over a 9 mile radius.

Some missiles are designed to actually hit and penetrate their target - basically blowing it to pieces. Other warheads contain shrapnel and explode about 50 feet away from the target - spraying the target with shrapnel that simply shreds it and causes catastrophic damage to a target such as an airliner.

If MH17 had taken a direct penetrating missile hit then we wouldn't see so much debris that appears almost unscathed.

The main impact area of the airliner contained the centre bulk of the plane - landing gear, engines, and wings where the jets fuel is stored. This would be why one part exploded and burned while other parts landed without any obvious fire damage.

As the airliner broke apart, perhaps as high or higher than 25,000 feet in the air, yet still travelling with a forward momentum, the villagers of Grabovo ended up with the bodies of the plane's passengers falling through roofs, landing on roads, crashing into gardens and ofcourse many falling into their fields.

Armed pro-Russian separatists were on the scene almost immediately. Local emergency crews were also on the scene to put out the fires at the main impact site.

as usual, a good thread DeathHand with lot's of information.
Today my country is in national mourning, Something that has not happened since the death of Queen Wilhelmina.
I can say that- even thought i am quite hardened at war, death and destruction and am allergic to collective grief- this event has really saddened me profoundly.
