AHHHHH FUCK
.
The man killed Saturday after an altercation with a Mount Holly Police officer had just been released from Gaston County Jail three days earlier.

Larry Todd Hoover, 33, died Saturday after Mount Holly Police Officer Lee Farris shot him following an altercation that began at a home early Saturday morning in a neighborhood described as usually quiet.

Mount Holly Police Chief Don Roper asked the SBI to investigate the shooting, a routine request after such an incident.

“Because this is an ongoing investigation, we are unable to release any additional information at this time,” SBI spokesman Anjanette Grube stated in an email Monday to The Gazette.

A Gaston County court released Hoover from Gaston County Jail without bond at 6:23 p.m. Wednesday. The Gaston County Sheriff’s Office had arrested Hoover on Jan. 22 on a misdemeanor probation violation.

He had served his sentence for the probation violation while in jail, according to records with the Gaston County Sheriff’s Office. He also had a parole warrant reinstated against him on Feb. 24, although the outcome of that case could not immediately be determined.

Hoover spent about a year in prison after he had his probation revoked in November 2017 on drug conviction charges in Gaston County more than two years earlier. He also had a September 2017 drug possession conviction in Rutherford County, according to prison records.

Saturday’s incident began around 6:45 a.m. with a 911 call requesting an ambulance for a person suffering mental health issues at a home at 304 Dutchmans Meadow Drive, according to emergency workers.

Roper described the incident as a domestic disturbance. During that incident, a fire was started in the upstairs bedroom of the home.

“A short time later there was contact between a male subject and officers during which the subject was shot and died at the scene,” Roper said Saturday.

The shooting occurred around 7:34 a.m. Saturday.

Before the shooting, Hoover apparently jumped out of the burning home while carrying a sword. Farris shot Hoover on the 100 block of Barrington Drive, a street adjacent to the back of the Dutchmans Meadow Drive home where the incident began.

“It’s a good neighborhood,” neighbor Randy Goldberg said Saturday. “We’ve never seen the police come through the neighborhood like this.”

Neither the SBI nor Roper have disclosed the current status of Officer Farris, but in almost all such cases the police department involved will place its officer on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation into the shooting.
