Let It All Bleed Out
It seems like ages ago when this story broke open in Southwestern Ontario. The police had bodies but no suspects. Even the suspect car that they posted on every billboard in town was the wrong car: I still remember watching for it on the highways as I commuted back and forth to work. Hell, I even rode my Harley into Burlington and joined one of the search teams that was looking for one of the victims.

With that, I'll get on to the story of the young couple that murdered atleast 3 young girls in Ontario back around 1990-91.

Paul Bernardo & Karla Homolka
Serial Murderers/Rapists

Set 1.

All For Love

It was all too good to be true. In 1990, Karla was engaged to a handsome, sophisticated professional accountant with money. It was going to be an incredible wedding: one that her family and friends would never forget.

She loved Paul very much. He was so unique and so very wild in bed. She would do absolutely anything to keep his love — anything at all.

What made this situation a little different than most engagements is that for several years Paul made outrageous demands on Karla — and Karla, just as outrageously, agreed to them.

Paul was very annoyed that Karla was not a virgin when he met her. It was, therefore, from his point of view, her responsibility to make it possible for Paul to take the virginity of Karla's pretty younger sister Tammy without her knowledge or consent. Once Karla accepted that logic, the rest was easy, even the idea of videotaping the whole thing seemed to make sense to her. After all, videotaping was a way to remember important events.

Karla worked in a veterinary clinic so she had a rudimentary knowledge of sedatives used for animals. The trick was figuring out what and how much to use to knock out Tammy so that Paul could rape her. Eventually, she decided on using halothane, an anesthetic which animals inhale before surgery.

A "Thoughtful" Rape

Stephen Williams in his book Unknown Darkness describes Karla's idea: "She had really thought this thing with Tammy through. After all, she did not want to kill her own sister; she just wanted to knock her out and give her to Paul for Christmas. They sedated animals before they put them to sleep for surgery, so it should be all right to do it to her sister. There was some risk without the proper equipment — she would have to put the halothane on a cloth and hold it over Tammy's face — but she would make sure Tammy had plenty of air and check her breathing regularly." A truly organized rape, as only a thoughtful sister could plan. Maybe even the most thought out and organized rape ever.

December 23, 1990, was the big day — Tammy's deflowering. Paul used his new video camcorder to take videos of Mr. and Mrs. Homolka, their daughters, Karla, Tammy and Lori and the Christmas decorations in the house.

Paul plied Tammy with drinks, laced with the sedative Halcion. The effects of the drugs and alcohol were swift and Tammy was out cold on the couch in no time. When the other members of the household went up to bed, Karla and Paul started to work on Tammy. Paul held the camera on Tammy while he raped her, leaving Karla to keep the halothane-laden rag over her sister's face. Then he ordered Karla to make sexual advances to her sleeping sister.

Suddenly Tammy threw up. Karla wished her sister hadn't eaten before this event, but Karla knew what to do. She did what they did in the veterinary clinic. She held her sister upside down to try to clear her throat.

The only problem was that Tammy choked to death. Their amateur attempts to revive her failed so they dressed her, hid their drugs and camera and called an ambulance. The first that Tammy and Karla's parents knew of this tragedy was when they heard the ambulance pull up to the house. Everybody was led to believe that Tammy had died from accidentally choking on her vomit.

Jane, the Wedding Gift

Karla was obsessed with Paul's happiness. Her greatest fear was that she would not be able to hold onto this wild and thrilling man who was to become her husband. When he would become bored or distracted, she would either do something to excite him or find another person for him to get excited about. Paul harped continually that Tammy was no longer available to him for his sexual pleasure and blamed Karla for causing her death. Karla searched for a replacement for Tammy — someone very young and virginal. Karla knew just the right person, a teenager we'll call Jane, who looked very much like Karla's dead sister, Tammy. Jane would be Karla's wedding gift to Paul.

Jane idolized Karla as a beautiful, sophisticated role model and gratefully accepted Karla's invitation to the Bernardos' new home they rented at 57 Bayview. The first evening, Karla took Jane to dinner and spent hours talking to her and plying her with sweet alcoholic drinks, laced with Halcion tablets. Jane passed out and slept deeply.

Once Jane was soundly asleep, Karla called Paul over for his surprise gift. How delighted he was when he saw how much Jane resembled Tammy. He was a bit concerned that Karla was using the same drug that killed Tammy to subdue Jane, but Karla convinced him that she was in control of the situation this time.

Once they undressed Jane, Paul videotaped Karla as she made sexual overtures to the sleeping girl. Then Paul took her virginity. With that accomplished and memorialized in the videotape, he moved on to his favorite fun — a brutal kind of anal sex. Fortunately for Jane, she was so drugged that she did not wake up during the whole disgusting ordeal.

Karla was left to clean the blood off the fifteen-year-old girl and put her to bed for the night. The next morning, Jane, who was very sick to her stomach and understandably sore, met Paul — she thought for the first time. She had no idea what had really happened to her.

While Paul seemed very grateful for the gift of Jane's virginity and was continually amazed at the things Karla would do for him, he was having second thoughts about marrying her. She was, after all, getting old, having already passed her twenty-first birthday and she was a far cry from being the virgin for which he lusted.

Note: Jane Doe, as we knew her in the news, survived the attack.

Leslie Mahaffy

Leslie Erin Mahaffy (July 5, 1976 – June 16, 1991) was a teenaged female student, resident of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, who was murdered by serial killers Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka.

Mahaffy's kidnapping was one in a series of disappearances of Ontario schoolgirls in the early 1990s, including Kristen French, also a victim of Bernardo and Homolka. Prior to killing Mahaffy in 1991 and French in 1992, the pair had raped and killed Homolka's teenaged sister Tammy in 1990.

The disappearances, arrests, and convictions were widely covered in Canadian media, becoming one of the most notorious crimes in Canadian history. was, after all, getting old, having already passed her twenty-first birthday and she was a far cry from being the virgin for which he lusted.

After Paul and Karla killed her, Paul reportedly cut Leslie's body into pieces with a circular saw in the basement of their home. He then bought cement with which to encase her severed body parts and tossed them into Lake Gibson.

Kristen French

Just one month before her 16th birthday as she walked home from Holy Cross Secondary School, a Catholic school in St. Catharines, Ontario for the Easter break weekend, she was approached at the entrance the Grace Lutheran church parking lot by serial killers Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo under the pretense of needing directions.

While Kristen assisted Homolka with map directions, Bernardo attacked her from behind and forced her into the car at knife point.

It was Thursday, April 16, 1992 and her kidnapping was seen by several eyewitnesses. During her three days of captivity the depraved couple videotaped themselves torturing and subjecting the 15 year old to sexual humiliation and degradation while forcing her to drink large amounts of alcohol before murdering her on April 19, 1992.

Her naked body was found in a ditch several kilometres away on Sideroad 1 in north Burlington on April 30, 1992, approximately one mile from the gravesite of Leslie Mahaffy, another of Bernardo and Homolka's murder victims.

On the day of Kristen's death, Karla reportedly stated that Paul had left the house to get them all MacDonalds. While Paul was absent, Karla stated that she hit Kristen on the head several times with a rubber mallet, causing Kristen's death. Apparently, Kristen was pleading with Karla to release her.

Kristen French is remembered for declining cooperation with her abductors in the later period of her abduction: "Some things are worth dying for." She said to Bernardo: "I don't know how your wife can stand to be around you." On one of the memorials dedicated to her is engraved "Her legacy proves an inspiration.

Closing the Net

Homolka and Bernardo had been questioned by police several times — in connection with the Scarborough Rapist investigation, Tammy Lyn Homolka's death, Bernardo's stalking of Sydney Kershen and the Patrich sisters (covered in the Paul Bernardo article) — before the death of Kristen French. The officer filed a report and, on 12 May 1992, an NRP sergeant and constable interviewed Bernardo briefly. The officers decided that he was an unlikely suspect, although Bernardo admitted having been questioned in connection with the Scarborough rapes.

Three days later, the Green Ribbon Task Force was created to investigate the murders of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French. Meanwhile the couple applied to have their names changed legally from Bernardo and Homolka to Teale, which Bernardo had taken from the villain of the 1988 movie Criminal Law — a serial killer.

At the end of May, John Motile, an acquaintance of Smirnis and Bernardo, also reported Bernardo as a possible murder suspect.

In December 1992, the Centre of Forensic Sciences finally began testing DNA samples provided by Bernardo two years earlier.

Twenty-six months after the sample had been submitted, Toronto police were informed that Bernardo's DNA matched that of the Scarborough Rapist and immediately placed him under 24-hour surveillance.

Metro Toronto Sexual Assault Squad investigators interviewed Homolka on 9 February 1993. Despite telling her their suspicions about Bernardo, Homolka concentrated on his abuse of her. Later that night she told her aunt and uncle that her husband was the Scarborough Rapist, that they were involved in the rapes and murders of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French, and that the rapes were recorded on video tape. NRP, meanwhile, re-opened the investigation into Tammy Homolka's death.

Metro Sexual Assault Squad and Green Ribbon Task Force detectives arrested Bernardo on numerous charges on 17 February 1993, and obtained search warrants. Because Bernardo's link to the murders was weak, however, the warrant contained limitations. No evidence that was not expected and documented in the warrant was permitted to be removed from the premises.

All video tapes the police found had to be viewed in the house. Damage to the house had to be kept to a minimum; police could not tear down walls looking for the videotapes. The search of the house, including updated warrants, lasted 71 days and the only tape found by the police had a short segment depicting Homolka performing oral sex on "Jane Doe".

Conviction

Paul

In 2006, Paul Bernardo gave an interview in prison suggesting he had reformed and would make a good parole candidate. He was not eligible for release in 2010 under the "faint hope" clause, since he was convicted of multiple murders. Bernardo is not eligible to apply for parole until July 2020. Bernardo is currently serving his term in the maximum security prison at Kingston Penitentiary, in the segregation unit. He spends 23 hours a day in an 8' × 4' (244 × 122 cm) prison cell.

Paul's criminal designation was registered as a "Dangerous Offender", which under Canadian law means that he can be kept in prison indefinitely.

Karla

In return for a plea bargain (12 years in prison for manslaughter), Homolka testified against Bernardo in his murder trial. This plea bargain received much public criticism from Canadians as Bernardo's first defence lawyer Ken Murray had withheld for 17 months videotapes that Bernardo made.

Homolka was released from prison on July 4, 2005. Several days before, Bernardo was interviewed by police and his lawyer, Tony Bryant. According to Bryant, Bernardo claimed that he had always intended to free the girls he and Homolka kidnapped. However, once Mahaffy's blindfold fell off, allowing Mahaffy to see Bernardo's face, Homolka was concerned that Mahaffy would identify Bernardo, and subsequently report them to the police.

Further, Bernardo claimed that Homolka planned to murder Mahaffy by injecting an air bubble into her bloodstream, eventually causing an embolism. This was considered crucial evidence, and prosecutors said that they would have never agreed to the plea bargain if they had seen the tapes.

Murray was later charged with obstruction of justice, of which he was acquitted, and he also faced a disciplinary hearing from the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Last part detailing Paul's known rape victims, prior to his and Karla's killings.

The Scarborough Rapist

Bernardo committed multiple sexual assaults, escalating in viciousness, in and around Scarborough, Ontario. Most of the assaults were on young women whom he had stalked after they exited buses late in the evening.

Known incidents are:

  • May 4, 1987, rape, 21-year-old woman, Scarborough, in front of her parents' house, after following her home. The attack lasted more than half an hour.
  • May 14, 1987, rape, 19-year-old woman in the back yard of her parents' house. This incident lasted over an hour.
  • July 17, 1987, attempted rape. Although he beat the young woman, he abandoned the attack after she fought back.
  • December 16, 1987, rape, 15-year-old girl. This rape lasted about one hour. The following day, the Toronto Police Service issued a warning to women in Scarborough travelling alone at night, especially those taking buses.
  • December 23, 1987, rape, 17-year-old. During this attack, Bernardo raped the 17-year-old with the knife he used to threaten his victims. It was at this point he began to be referred to as the 'Scarborough Rapist'.
  • April 18, 1988, Bernardo attacked a 17-year-old. The fifth assault, this one lasted 45 minutes.
  • May 25, 1988, Bernardo was nearly caught by a uniformed Metro Toronto investigator staking out a bus shelter. The investigator noticed him hiding under a tree and pursued him on foot, but Bernardo escaped.
  • May 30, 1988, rape, 18-year-old, Clarkson - about 40 kilometres southwest of Scarborough. This attack lasted 30 minutes.
  • October 4, 1988, attempted rape, Scarborough. His intended victim fought him off but he inflicted two stab wounds to her thigh and buttock which required 12 stitches.
  • November 16, 1988, rape, 18-year-old in the backyard of her parents' house.
  • November 17, 1988, Metro Police formed a special task force dedicated to capturing the Scarborough Rapist.
  • December 27, 1988, attempted rape, an alerted neighbour chased Bernardo off after he had begun his attempted eighth rape.
  • June 20, 1989, attempted rape, the young woman fought against him and her screams alerted neighbours. Bernardo fled with scratches on his face.
  • August 15, 1989, rape, 22-year-old woman. He had stalked her the previous night from outside the window of her apartment and waited for her to arrive home. This particularly vicious attack lasted two hours.
  • November 21, 1989, rape, 15-year-old whom he saw in a bus shelter. This attack lasted 45 minutes.
  • December 22, 1989, rape, 19-year-old. This attack occurred in a stairwell of an underground parking lot and lasted 30 minutes.
  • May 26, 1990, rape, 19-year-old. This rape lasted over an hour. However, his victim's vivid recollection of her attacker permitted police to make a computer composite portrait, which was released two days later by police and published in Toronto and area newspapers.
  • July 1990, two months after receiving tips that Bernardo fit the Scarborough Rapist composite, he was interviewed by two police detectives.
Between May and September 1990, the police had submitted more than 130 suspects' samples for DNA testing when they received two reports that the person they were seeking was Paul Bernardo. The first, in June, had been called in by a bank employee. The second call was received from Tina Smirnis, the wife of one of the three Smirnis brothers who were among Bernardo's closest friends. Smirnis told the detectives that Bernardo "had been 'called in' on a previous rape investigation — once in December, 1987 - but he had never been interviewed."[2] He frequently talked about his sex life to Smirnis and liked analingus, rough sex and anal sex.

Mr. Smirnis's phrasing was awkward and stilted and consequently left the detectives unsure of whether to take him seriously. But after cross-checking several files the detectives decided to interview Bernardo. The interview, on November 20, 1990, lasted 35 minutes and Bernardo voluntarily gave samples for forensic testing. When the detectives asked Bernardo why he thought he was being investigated for the rapes, he admitted that he did resemble the composite. The detectives concluded that such a well-educated, well-adjusted, congenial young man could not be responsible for the vicious crimes; he "was far more credible than...Smirnis who, with his awkward, strange way of speaking, might just be trying to collect the reward." Paul Bernado was released the following day.

This case has always amazed me. I mean the thought of this woman out and walking around and with children of her own scares the crap out of me. She didn't even have to register as a SO. She has a new name and everything now. I just can't believe those tapes have remained unseen and out of the public eye. I'm sure some people would pay good money to get their hands on them...
