Golden Dawn's planned Maundy Thursday free food distribution for needy Greek families was halted by riot police in Syntagma Square early this morning. Police used tear gas to prevent the free distribution of food.
The Mayor of Athens, Giorgos Kaminis, issued a ban on the ultra-nationalist party distributing free food ahead of the Orthodox Easter celebrations.
Kaminis called Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias to request police intervention to prevent the Chrysafgites from handing out food.
When members of Golden Dawn arrived at the square in the early morning four squads of riot police were waiting to prevent Chrysafgites from unloading the food trucks. Police used an extensive amount of chemicals, making it impossible to carry out the distribution of free food.
Golden Dawn have announced that the free distribution of food will now take place at 10pm at the offices of T. C. Athens - Diligiannis 50 Larissa Station.
