tech Samsung One UI vs. Google "naked" Android OS

Been playing with a few android phones and one things that continues to annoy vs. Apple's IOS is the fucking bloatware installed on most devices.

Last device I tried was the Samsung S23 with Android 13 and their overlay One UI. When I search for and then try what most people tout about One UI I'm not left with the impression I need much of it (photo editing, some device shortcuts, etc.) and would expect that most of what I want to do would be captured natively in the Android OS. Am I wrong?

Next phone I want to try out is the Pixel 7. I've never owned a google phone but they always seem to be described as having the least amount of bloatware and the most "virginal" flavor of the Android OS.

So guess the question is there anything that's really being missed by not using something like Samsung's One UI overlay that can't be accomplished by Android 13? If I wanted the bare Android experience on a Samsung phone couldn't I still root it....or is that still an option these days?

And any thoughts on the Pixel build quality?

As much as I can like technology at times this does sort of having me wish back to the days of plain old cell phones. The Motorola MicroTac Elite, Razr V3 were excellent phones! Smart devices could have ended with the RIM 957 and I'd probably have been happy.

I've never played with Samsung One, not a fan of Samsung's UI, but if you like Motorola phones they make Android One phones too, and I highly recommend them. They last for ages and there's no bloatware. I'd have a look at Motorola One if you're interested.

ETA: my Moto One phone was the previous year's model when I bought it unlocked in 2018 and the only reason I'm looking for a new phone is that I need to have so many big apps on my internal storage that the 32gb isn't cutting it. I even once considered getting a cheap burner for school so I don't have to give up this one.

I'd suggest getting one unlocked if you can help it, since sometimes service providers add their own stuff to phones.

In Australia the term 'could I still root it' could get you some gaol time if attempted on a phone...

iPhone. Not just because they work seamlessly, but wouldn’t you like to join @Rick James and I with the gorgeous ‘Mac Fag’ medal? 😂
I've always liked iPhones and over the years have made investments in IOS apps used on both phones and tablets but things are changing. Work has provided me with an iPad and an iPhone which are mostly locked down by way of adding any non-business software or apps. I'm fine with that, they're their devices, they provide the network access so they are free to control how the devices are used. I've always had an iPhone as my personal device but after Apples annoying woke fuckery with 16.3 update I'm done with them. That faggot Tim Cook can go and fuck himself, I'm not going to have BLM horseshit forced down my throat with software updates.

So Android it is. I'd just like the most IOS like experience is all, so clean, simple not a lot of extra shit.

As an aside when Apple started using Intel processors on their desktops I purchased a Mini to use in a small remote office I had at the time and used boot camp to install Window 7 and used it as the default OS. Drove a couple of my Apple'centric friends nuts that I'd sully the platform with what they perceived as an inferior OS. Fuck 'em, I liked the small quiet form factor.

Can you imagine the backlash if they honoured ‘white history’. Or made a wall paper for ‘straight men’s month’ 😂.

I don't even want a month. I'd be happy if they created a "straight middle aged white man" day.

I have a friend who's just started a career search and he's a little put off that whenever he goes to a company's HR or job landing page all the models are 1) not white, 2) not male, 3) don't look straight, 4) no one over 30. Kind of sends the message that if you're a middle aged white guy you might as well go fuck yourself.

There’s kind of a song, my kids listen to for some random reason…

You might want to consider a custom for your android it's not that hard to install just read multiple guides if they all come to the same conclusion that is the correct way to install it gets rid of all the bloatware; One UI is average!

If you want a pixel 7 install pixel experience custom rom works just the same P.S make sure to install the rom for your exact model.

That is if the custom roms are available, it's only a very new phone, so you may have to wait a bit! also, it's best to install rom when the phone is out of warranty! Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Went to the local phone store and to actually see/touch the pixel phones. I liked them, particularly the 6a as it has a slightly smaller footprint (why the fuck have phones all gone to a +6.5" display, I don't want to carry something that goddamned big in my pants....my meaty penis already takes too much room). Those dinkwipes want $600 for it, amazon (who have also been kind of worthless cunts of late) are selling it unlocked with warranty for $400. Done! Have been playing with it for the past hour or so and the lack of any Samsung or other manufacturer overlay is greatly appreciate. Zero bloatware, very clean install, did the upgrade to 13 sans problems, visual voicemail from my carrier works.

I'm pleased and apple can go and fuck themselves.

My friend and I are convinced that the RAZR was the best phone ever made. He used one all the way up to about 2013.

The V3 was an excellent phone. I could be wrong but I seem to being able to use it as a tethered modem (I think one of the first phones you could do that with, till then you had to use a separate USB data stick).

There were some also a lot of shitty phones back then.

Nokia 282, one of their first attempts at a clamshell and to compete against the startac. It was garbage quality.

I think it was the nokia 2120, one of the first digital TDMA phones. I think it might have been more of an issue of the TDMA network not being fully deployed but it couldn't switch between it and the legacy analog AMPS network and most of the time it sounded like you were taking on a tin can.

Motorola made a phone, I can't remember the model but I believe it fell under the startac family but a different form factor than most of the line. It was comically small and utter dogshit quality.

In the early 90's before mobile data was a thing there was a company that made a cell phone that had an embedded analog modem that you had to connect to your computer via a serial port (this was pre-USB). It was about the size of a standard building brick, weighed twice as much and it had a brutally short battery life. When using it as a phone you'd maybe get 45 minutes talk time. As a modem you pretty much had to connect it to a power supply as it would drain the tiny battery in <15 minutes. I kind of wish I still had that phone, not that it would be useable but it was built to mil-spec standards so almost bullet proof.

My first phone bought in 1992 was an audiovox, can't remember the model but it looked like this. Not bad actually. I sold it & the number to a friend in 1994, his wife still has that number.

If I ever get really bored I should try to list every phone I've owned or had issued to me by an employer. Gotta be close to 60 different devices.

I'm still rocking a Samsung note 9, it's basically everything I need in a phone, big screen, runs anything, it's still fast although the android version is probably outdated now. Good security too.
