There is a lot to this story- bare with me.

The only reason why I’m writing about this is because, unfortunately, it’s personal.
Three days ago, 20 year old Sean Purdy murdered his father, 52 year old Lance Purdy in their home in Pine Grove, California. I live down the street from the Purdy family and went to highschool with Sean and his sister- my fiance did as well. A family friend, who is older than me, knew the Purdy’s eldest children and attended school with them when Sean was little.
My fiance and I were driving home a few nights ago when we were met by 3 cop cars blocking our street. When asked why we couldn’t pass, we noticed yellow tape surrounding our neighbors house, along with one man with a CSI jacket on. (This was around 11pm.) A sheriff greeted us and told us to back up our truck and wait. We were escorted to our home by police, along with a few other neighbors, and were not permitted to get any closer to the house they were surrounding.
Naturally, I asked around to anyone who was awake about what had happened.

After comparing everything I learned from neighbors and friends of the Purdy’s to the statements from police and my own insight, the story goes something like this:

Sean Purdy was staying at home by himself while both of his parents were vacationing. After not hearing from their son, his father flew back home to do a welfare check on him. From what his friend’s have said, he was “acting weird”. After repeated attempts to reach her husbands phone, Sean’s mother called a neighbor to check on the two men in the home. This neighbor found the front door open, pools of blood inside, along with a forged suicide note that Sean had written and a fire pit with half-charred, bloody clothing inside. They called police immediately- who then found more blood, death threats written on notes, and a Walmart receipt for items consistent with the crimescene.
Sean fled the scene in his family’s Subaru, and was found at a gas station near Reno, where he evaded police by ditching the vehicle and taking off on-foot.
He was arrested and taken into custody on Thursday afternoon in Washoe County, where after a four hour interrogation, he admitted to the murder and led police to his father’s body.
This morning at 4:15am, police discovered Lance’s body buried in a shallow grave in Pioneer. Around 11am today, the body was positively identified as Sean’s father and the Purdy family was contacted.

Note: Details of exactly how he killed his father haven’t been released, seeing as it has only been a few days. The forged suicide note led me to believe Sean had shot his dad, but no weapon was evident.

My fiance and I were extremely curious about this case after stumbling upon the crimescene, and we waited for hours the next day watching the news.
Friends of ours think drugs may have been involved, but Sean was a straight-edge kid. He was attending college for accounting and is not a violent person and we have no idea what could have fueled this.

— Something interesting about the day he murdered his father is that there were two other unrelated murders in my county that same day, along with a suicide.

Maybe we should move.

EDIT: The murder has been deemed premeditated. The receipts found were from Walmart where Sean purchased a shovel and a machete, among other things for the murder and burial of his father. Apparently, he had an ongoing drug problem that was swept under the rug- hence, why nobody was aware. His father (allegedly) flew home to discuss his son’s addiction. The family altered the details about the whole situation for obvious reasons.
