Joseph Franklin
Number of Victims: 15+
Method of Choice: Shooting
Area of Operation: Multi-State (TN, GA, WI, MO, VA, IN, OH, WV, PA, UT)
Date of Arrest: 09/25/1980
  • September 6, 1976: Franklin followed an interracial couple down an alley and sprayed mace at them.
[edit] 1977

  • July 29, 1977: Beth Sholom synagogue in Chattanooga is firebombed. Franklin has confessed to the crime.[1]
  • August 7, 1977: dressed in cowboy regalia, Franklin fatally shot a black man and a white woman, Alphonse Manning and Toni Schwenn, while driving away from a bank robbery in Madison, Wisconsin. He was frustrated with the slow speed of Manning's driving. Manning stopped his car and got out; Franklin picked up a stolen handgun and shot him, then walked over to his car and shot his friend. On February 14, 1986, he received two life sentences for these murders.
  • October 8, 1977: Franklin hid in long grass behind a telegraph pole at Brith Shalom, a synagogue in Richmond Heights, Missouri and used a hunting rifle to kill Gerald Gordon and injure two others. He confessed to this in 1995 and was tried in 1997. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death by lethal injection in the Potosi Correctional Center in Potosi, Missouri.[1] He is still in prison there.
[edit] 1978

  • Franklin claims that, on March 6, 1978, he used a .44 caliber rifle to ambush Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and his lawyer Gene Reeves in Lawrenceville, Georgia. In his confession, Franklin said this was in retaliation for an edition of Hustler displaying interracial sex.[1] The confession came years after the shooting. Flynt was paralyzed from the waist down. Flynt believes Franklin's confession, but there have been no charges in the case. Many (but not all) of the law enforcement agents investigating the shooting have stated that they now believe the strong possibility that Franklin was the shooter of Flynt.[citation needed]
  • July 29, 1978: Franklin hid near a Pizza Hut in Chattanooga, and shot and killed Bryant Tatum with a 12-gauge shotgun; he shot his girlfriend, Nancy Hilton; she survived. Franklin confessed and pleaded guilty, being given a life sentence, as well as a sentence for an unrelated armed robbery in 1977.[1]
[edit] 1979

  • July 12, 1979: Taco Bell manager Harold McIver (27), a black man, was fatally shot through a window from 150 yards (140 m) in Doraville, Georgia. Franklin confessed but was not tried or sentenced for this crime. Franklin said that McIver was in close contact with white women, so he murdered him.[1]
  • August 18, 1979: Franklin shot and killed a black man seated in a Burger King in Falls Church, Virginia. Franklin confessed to the murder on videotape.
  • October 21, 1979: Franklin used a rifle to kill an interracial couple, Jesse Taylor, who was black, and Marian Bresette, in Oklahoma City. He has not yet been tried for this murder.
  • December 5, 1979: Franklin shot and killed the 15-year-old prostitute Mercedes Lynn Masters, with whom he had previously lived in Dekalb County, Georgia. She had told Franklin that she had black customers.
[edit] 1980

  • January 8 or January 11, 1980: Franklin murdered a 19-year-old black man in a long-distance rifle attack in Indianapolis. Franklin awaits trial for aggravated murder.
  • January 16 or January 17, 1980: Franklin shot a black man with the same rifle from 150 yards (140 m) in Indianapolis. He awaits trial for aggravated murder.
  • May 2, 1980: Franklin shot hitchhiker Rebecca Bergstrom with a handgun in Monroe County, Wisconsin. He confessed to this murder in 1984.
  • May 29, 1980: Franklin says he shot and seriously wounded civil rights activist and Urban League president Vernon Jordan, Jr. after seeing him with a white woman in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Franklin initially denied any part in the crime and was acquitted, but later confessed.[1]
  • June 8, 1980: Franklin has confessed to killing cousins Darrell Lane (14) and Dante Evans Brown (13) in Cincinnati, Ohio. Waiting on an overpass to shoot a racially mixed couple, he shot the boys instead. He was convicted in 1998 and received two life sentences for these murders.[3][4]
  • June 15, 1980: Franklin shot and killed an interracial couple, Arthur Smothers (22) and Kathleen Mikula (16), in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Franklin has confessed, although Pennsylvania has not extradited and tried him.
  • June 25, 1980: Franklin used a .44 Ruger pistol to kill two hitchhikers, Nancy Santomero (19) and Vicki Durian (26), in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. He confessed to the crime in 1997 to an Ohio assistant prosecutor in the course of investigation in another case; he said he picked up the white girls and decided to kill them after one said she had a black boyfriend. Jacob Beard of Florida, was convicted and imprisoned in 1993 on these charges. He was freed in 1999 and a new trial was ordered based on Franklin's confession.[3]
  • August 20, 1980: Franklin killed two black men, Ted Fields and David Martin, near Liberty Park located in Salt Lake City, Utah.[1] He was tried on federal civil rights charges as well as state first-degree murder charges.[5] Franklin was convicted and received two life sentences for the murders.
  • September 1980: Franklin escaped from police custody, but was recaptured in Florida

Ronald Dominique
Number of Victims: 8 - 23
Method of Choice: Rape, Strangulation
Area of Operation: Louisiana
Date of Arrest: 12/01/2006

Bayou-born serial killer Ronald Dominique confessed to killing 23 men between 1997 and 2006. He said he killed the men because he didn't want to go to jail for raping them. Dominique had been to jail before, on a rape charge in 1996, after neighbors saw a half-dressed man escape from his home. His victims were gay men he picked up at gay bars, or straight men he lured to his home with the promise of sex with a fictional wife. Unattractive and awkward, Dominique had difficulty meeting men at gay bars, where he sometimes cross-dressed as Patti LaBelle, so he sought out men who'd be willing to have sex for money. After tying his victims up, raping and killing them, he dumped their bodies in ditches and sugarcane fields. He pleaded guilty to eight murders, and was sentenced to eight consecutive life terms.

Known Victims: Kenneth Randolph, Michael Barnett, Leon Lirette, August Watkins, Kurt Cunningham, Alonzo Hogan, Chris Deville, Wayne Smith, Nicholas Pellegrin

Richard Biegenwald
Number of Victims: 9+
Method of Choice: Rape, Shooting, Stabbing
Area of Operation: New Jersey
Date of Arrest: 01/22/1983

Between 1958 and 1983, Richard Biegenwald killed at least 9 people, largely for thrills. He came from a rough past; as a child he was often beaten by his alcoholic father. At 11 years old, he set himself on fire at his mother's house. Biegenwald shot most of his victims, and not all of his murders appeared to be sexually motivated. After killing his first victim, a grocery store owner, during a robbery, Biegenwald was sentenced to life, but got out in 16 years for good behavior. He went on to kill several more people, including two young women whose bodies he buried in his mother's yard. He was found guilty on five counts of first degree murder and received a death sentence, which was later changed to four life terms without the possibility of parole. He died of respiratory and kidney failure on March 12, 2008.

Known Victims: Stephen Sladowski, 47, Maria Ciallella, 17, Deborah Osborne, 17, Betsy Bacon, 17, Anna Olesiewicz, 18, William J. Ward, 34

sean-gillis.jpg

Sean Gillis
Number of Victims: 8
Method of Choice: Rape, Mutilation, Strangulation, Stabbing
Area of Operation: Louisiana
Date of Arrest: 04/29/2004

Now serving life without the possibility of parole, Baton Rouge native Sean Gillis murdered eight women between 1994 and 2003. He stalked, abducted and raped his victims, mutilated their bodies and dumped them in drainage ditches and bayous. His final victim, 43-year-old Donna Bennett Johnston, was severely mutilated -- Gillis cut off her left nipple, cut out a tattoo on her thigh, and severed her left arm. He then photographed her body and kept the photos on his computer. These, and other photos of victims, were later used for evidence. He was less audacious with his first victim, 81-year-old Ann Bryan. After she screamed when he tried to rape her, Gillis stabbed her 50 times and left her body at the retirement home where she lived. Gillis closely followed another Baton Rouge serial killer, Derrick Todd Lee, who was operating during the same time period. While Lee targeted successful working women, Gillis was largely after prostitutes. He later told detectives that his victims were "disposable members of society."

Known Victims: Ann Bryan, 81, Katherine Ann Hall, 29, Hardee Schmidt, 52, Joyce Williams, 36, Lillian Robinson, 52, Marilyn Nevils, 38, Johnnie Mae Williams, 45, Donna Bennett
Johnston, 43.

maury-travis.jpg

Maury Travis
Number of Victims: 12 - 20
Method of Choice: Rape, Strangulation
Area of Operation: Missouri
Date of Arrest: 06/07/2002

After his arrest, St. Louis police searched the home of Maury Travis, and were shocked by what they found. A basement set up like a torture chamber, equipped with bondage gear and a stun gun. Also discovered was a VHS tape, labeled "Your Wedding Day," on which Travis recorded himself torturing and raping his victims. He brought home prostitutes and let them smoke crack on his bed before engaging in consensual sex. He then berated them for smoking crack, and made them dance for him and call him "master." He was caught after anonymously sent a map leading to one of his victim's bodies to the police. Detectives were able to track down Travis by contacting Expedia.com, where the map had come from, and obtaining Travis's IP address. He is known to have killed at least 12 prostitutes, but claimed to have killed 17. On June 10, 2002, Travis hung himself in his cell.

Known Victims: Mary Shields, 61, Alysa Greenwade, 34, Teresa Wilson, 36, Betty James, 46, Verona Thompson, 36, Yvonne Crues, 50, Brenda Beasley, 33, five unidentified women.

robert-shulman.jpg

Robert Shulman
Number of Victims: 5+
Method of Choice: Dismemberment, Bludgeoning
Area of Operation: Long Island, NY
Date of Arrest: 04/06/1996

Postal worker Robert Shulman, like many other serial killers, targeted prostitutes. He beat them to death with a baseball bat or hammer, and dismembered their bodies. He confessed to killing five prostitutes between 1991 and 1996, and was sentenced to death. His death sentence was changed to life without parole after New York state overturned the death penalty in 2004. On April 13, 2006, Shulman died in prison. His younger brother, Barry Shulman, pleaded guilty to helping Robert dispose of two of the bodies, and was sentenced to two years in county jail.

Known Victims: Lori Vasquez, 24, Kelly Sue Bunting, 28, Lisa Anne Warner, 18, two unidentified women.

chester-turner.jpg

Chester Turner
Number of Victims: 11+
Method of Choice: Rape, Strangulation
Area of Operation: Los Angeles, CA

Serial rapist and murderer Chester Turner terrorized LA between 1987 and 1998, during which time he killed 13 women, one of whom was pregnant. He was charged with the death of the fetus, known in the case as "Baby Washington," after his mother, Regina Washington. Another man, homeless drug addict David Allen Jones, had been convicted for three of the murders, but DNA evidence later proved that Turner was responsible for two of them. The third, that of Tammie Christmas, could not be proven with DNA, but prosecutors believe Turner is responsible. Jones was released from prison after 11 years and awarded $720,000 by the city of Los Angeles. Already sentenced to death, Turner is set to be tried for four additional murders.

Known Victims: Paula Vance, 24, Brenda Bries, 39, Diane Johnson, 21, Annette Ernest, 26, Anita Fishman, 31, Regina Washington, 27, Andrea Tripplett, 29, Desarae Jones, 29, Natalie Price, 31, Mildred Beasley, 45, Debra Williams, 32, Mary Edwards, 42.

joseph-franklin.jpg

Joseph Franklin
Number of Victims: 15+
Method of Choice: Shooting
Area of Operation: Multi-State (TN, GA, WI, MO, VA, IN, OH, WV, PA, UT)
Date of Arrest: 09/25/1980

Joseph Paul Franklin was born James Clayton Vaughn. He changed his name to honor two men he admired: Joseph Paul Goebbels, one of Adolf Hitler's right-hand men, and Benjamin Franklin. While many serial killers are motivated by sexual perversion, Joseph Franklin, a former Klansman, was a racially motivated killer. Targeting Jews, black men and interracial couples, he embarked on a cross-country killing spree, which lasted from 1977 until 1980. During this time, he robbed banks to support his "mission." Many crimes of which he has not been convicted are attributed to Franklin, including the 1978 assassination attempt of Hustler publisher Larry Flynt. In one of his first murders, Franklin, dressed as a cowboy, shot a black man and a white woman in their car. Other times, he hid out and shot joggers or passers-by with a sniper rifle. He is currently on death row in Missouri.

kenneth-mcduff.jpg

Kenneth McDuff
Number of Victims: 14+
Method of Choice: Rape, Strangulation
Area of Operation: Texas
Date of Arrest: 05/04/1992

Texas killer Kenneth McDuff was on death row from 1968 to 1972, and later in general population, for murdering three teenagers in 1966, but was paroled due to overcrowding in 1989. He went on to kill at least 11 more people after his release. He killed mostly prostitutes, tying them up, beating and strangling them to death. He was finally caught while living in Missouri under the assumed name Richard Fowler, after a coworker saw him on America's Most Wanted. He was executed by lethal injection on November 17, 1998. Due to the aftermath of McDuff's early parole, Texas instituted a set of laws that prevent violent criminals from being paroled early. These are known as the McDuff laws.

Known Victims: Robert Brand, Mark Dunman, Edna Louis Sullivan, Sarafia Parker, Brenda Thompson, Regenia DeAnne Moore, Colleen Reed, Valencia Joshua, Melissa Northrup.

cesar-barone.jpg

Cesar Barone
Number of Victims: 4
Method of Choice: Rape, Shooting, Strangulation
Area of Operation: Oregon, Florida
Date of Arrest: February, 1993

Though not nearly as prolific as some of the other killers on this list, Cesar Barone stands out because of his choice of victims. During his career as as serial killer between 1991 and 1993, he killed at least four women, ranging in age from 23 to 61. Instead of picking up prostitutes and transients whose disappearance would go unnoticed, Barone, born Adolph James Rode Jr., Barone killed women with ties in the community, including 41-year-old nurse Martha Bryant. In addition to the Oregon murders, Barone is suspected of killing a woman in Florida -- the same woman he spent time in juvenile hall for assaulting. While in prison, Barone briefly shared a cell with Ted Bundy. He is currently on death row.

Known Victims: Margaret H. Schmidt, 61, Martha B. Bryant, 41, Chantee E. Woodman, 23, Betty Lou Williams, 51

larry-bright.jpg

Larry Bright
Number of Victims: 8
Method of Choice: Rape, Strangulation, Drugging
Area of Operation: Illinois
Date of Arrest: January, 2005

Between 2003 and 2004, Larry Bright killed 8 women and either dumped their bodies along rural roads, or burned them in a fire pit behind the home he shared with his mother. All of his victims were raped and strangled to death, except one, who he plied with cocaine until she died of an overdose. To avoid the death penalty, he pleaded guilty to eight counts of murder and was sentenced to life without parole.

Known Victims: Sabrina Payne, 36, Barbara Williams, 36, Linda K. Neal, 40, Brenda Erving, 41, Shaconda Thomas, 32, Shirley Ann Trapp, 45, Tamara Walls, 29, Laura Lollar, 33.
