Wagner Leader Claims Bakhmut Has Been Taken

May 20, 2023

Russia's Wagner Group private army claimed on Saturday to have finally captured the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut after the longest and bloodiest battle of the war - but Kyiv denied the city had fallen, though it called the situation there critical.

If confirmed, the announcement by Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin that his troops had finally pushed the Ukrainians out of the last built-up area inside the city would amount to claiming Moscow's first big prize in more than 10 months.

But any sense of victory for Russia appears likely to be fleeting. The announcement comes after a week in which Ukrainian forces have made their most rapid gains in six months on Bakhmut's northern and southern flanks, which Prigozhin has said put his troops inside the city at risk of encirclement.

Prigozhin, who has repeatedly denounced Russia's regular military for abandoning ground captured earlier by his men, said his own forces would now pull out of Bakhmut in five days to rest, handing the ruins of the city over to the regular military.

"Today, at 12 noon, Bakhmut was completely taken," Prigozhin said in a video in which he appeared in combat fatigues in front of a line of fighters holding Russian flags and Wagner banners. "We completely took the whole city, from house to house."

Ukrainian military spokesperson Serhiy Cherevatyi told Reuters: "This is not true. Our units are fighting in Bakhmut."

Ukraine's deputy defence minister, Hanna Maliar, reported "heavy fighting in Bakhmut. The situation is critical," she said on the Telegram messaging service.

"As of now, our defenders control some industrial and infrastructure facilities in the area and the private sector."

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said, "This is not the first time Prigozhin has said, 'We seized everything and are dominating.'"

Moscow has long claimed that capturing Bakhmut would be a stepping stone toward advancing deeper into the Donbas region it claims to have annexed from Ukraine. It has made it the principal target of a massive winter and spring offensive that failed to capture any significant ground elsewhere.

But Prigozhin has said that Bakhmut, a city of 70,000 people before the war, has little strategic significance, despite its huge symbolic importance because of the scale of losses in Europe's bloodiest ground battle since the Second World War.

Distant explosions could be heard in the background as Prigozhin spoke during the video, in which he said his forces would withdraw from Bakhmut from May 25 for rest and retraining, handing over control to the regular Russian army.

Russia Backs Up Prigozhin's Claim

May 20, 2023

Russia claimed on Saturday to have fully captured the smashed eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, which would mark an end to the longest and bloodiest battle of the 15-month war.

The assault on the largely levelled city was led by troops from the Wagner Group of mercenaries, whose leader Yevgeny Prigozhin said earlier in the day that his troops had finally pushed the Ukrainians out of the last built-up area inside the city.

Taking Bakhmut - which Russia refers to by its Soviet-era name of Artyomovsk - would represent Moscow's first big victory in the conflict in more than 10 months.

"As a result of offensive actions by Wagner assault units, supported by artillery and aviation of the Southern Group of Forces, the liberation of Artyomovsk has been completed," the Russian defence ministry said in a one-line statement.

Kyiv denied Prigozhin's claim earlier on Saturday, but did not have an immediate response to the defence ministry's statement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated troops on capturing the city and said those who had distinguished themselves would be given awards, domestic Russian news agencies reported.

At a certain point, any objective is worthless given the damage done. Last time I checked the Ukrainians were leveling buildings to make them useless to the Russians. I think they had a plan weeks ago.

While Wagner group claims victory what was the cost? What was the ratio?

Meanwhile, we see Russia in taking T-55 out of mothball, a museum relic and deploying them giving troops weeks worth of training and sending them out ins tanks with zero upgrades. That seems the act of a desperate country and not a ranked 2 world military.

Who is attacking? The entire Russian army or mercenaries? Ukraine lost the entire city to 50,000 mercs backed with support from some regular forces while 80% of the actual Russian army waits for NATO to back up its pathetic words with action and commit their own troops. Poland wants to fuck around and find out. You'd be a fool to think Putin went all in to capture one city. When ballistic missiles start hitting European capitals then the fun really begins.

For one Take your meds

Secondly, when that happens that is World War 3 and Russia is not going to last long. They cannot handle a small military like Ukraine they are not going to deal with professional well armed and funded militaries. They are not going to handle the USAF or the NAVY and when the ground forces show up it is all over. You seem way too excited about this but you know that would be the end of Russia. You are going to have to think this out a bit bub The world would be better off without Russian tyrants and the Russian people the same.

To 50,00 mercs? They killed abt that many to abt 25k of their own dead. It was the artillery and incendiary bombs and rockets that took the place. What exactly is the "actual Russian army"? You mean the best of them? Well, who were the Russians who invaded back in Feb/22? Mobiks? DNR comscripts? Russia hasn't got the manpower and further mobilization will only make things worse for Putin. Besides, they have taken a beating and any new guys are just replacements, fresh off the press, not men who will add more strength. Russia has no idea where the Ukrainian counter-offensice will take place and are kinda spread out.

Russian must have learned how to reincarnate the dead: Joseph Goebbels is a Nazi Russian now? Everytime I hear this shit about NATO I think of how good (a master, actually) he was at propaganda for Hitler's cause and lies and insanity - he could make anyone believe every goldfish had to be exterminated because they were drinking all that good German Rhine water.

Ukraine had its ass handed to them by conscripts and mercenaries. The Russian army can mobilize up to 2 million infantry with reserves. Are 2 million attacking? Ukrainian leaders are full of shit just like American and European leaders. Their deaths would be a welcome outcome for many. Fuck NATO as well, that group hug means nothing to me personally, or for my own country. Ukraine is a irrelevant shithole waste of money.

Then WHY isn't the great Russian army on Polish borders now, I could tell you, but, you won't like it. Ass handed to them by conscripts & merc's? You obviously didn't see/want to see where Ukrainian conscripts pushed the Russians back to where they are now, not to bad for a cowardly army led by a Jew.

Depends who wants to start WW3, Ukraine didn't want a war with Russia, Russia thought this was going to be a walk in the park & is now in a shit fight with a weaker opponent (& the Russian body count rises) Europe sees this for what it is, Russian aggression to take land (the Russian media channels are mouthing off about taking Berlin & nuking everyone) so, they are concerned about where this will end, do you stop Russia or allow it to take countries, & now we wonder why NATO was formed in the first place, Putin has forced 2 countries into NATO because of Russian aggression, sucko Putin, now more European countries will be against Russian aggression, the only thing Russia has going for it is military numbers, their tactics are shit, as have been proven, they are lucky that NATO is sitting back, Russia isn't the only bitch with nukes.

This isnt Russias first rodeo. Theyre pretty well versed in war tactics from the past.

Bidens weakness and aloofness may have been what caused the invasion @mrln. Im not saying its our job to stop these things. But it was an opportunity for Putin. Maybe Taiwan wouldve gone too if we didnt help.

It's not just NATO. but the EU and PACT as well, and one might think that perhaps Europe isn't too keen on one super power invading a lesser country, that, in 1991, was given it's Independence from Russia. Russia has to train/retrain, and equip those 2 million reservist...they need the equipment, the kits, the logistics, the time, and the ammo, much of which they are not entirely stock-piled on (unless they just keep bringing out their post WW2 and Cold War kit).

And the Russian public? They will go absolutely nuts if Putin to mobilize and push in more troops, and even if he decides to call this fiasco as WAR (which it is), instead of an operation, and brings in conscription then he's done. See, in war, he can't use conscription. Ukraine might not win, but they are fighting tooth and nail with the desire to defend. The Russians: most probably don't even want to be there, unless ofcourse they are Wagnerites and will get a full prison pardon if they live past their contract term.

About the conscripts and mercenaries: no withdrawal or retreating - they are forced forward even when they know they will be killed, and tens of thousands of them were. Wave after wave are sent in and eventually they start to wear down the defenders. But that's war and how attrition can change things. That's Russian military doctrine: send in wave after wave of ground forces, who usually get slaughtered, then bomb the place to the ground, then send in more troops. The ratio of fighters in Bakhmut was not even...maybe 10:1 on Wagner/Russia's side, by some estimates.

Either way, Bakhmut did a good job of holding on, attriting Russian and Wagner forces, their equipment and most importantly that beloved artillery, albeit at a cost to their own forces. But there's many things going on here that you, him, her, and I don't know about and won't know until it happens.

Ukraine isn't interested in Russian land. Mute point there. In terms of what they currently hold in Ukraine, about 17% (in Feb. 2023 was 11%). All of that is not territory captured during this current Operation, they already had Crimea, parts of Donetsk and parts of Luhansk (all since 2014). That's alot of land right there. So your 18%-20% does not reflect what they have taken since Feb. 2022, which is what you're making it sound like.

Talk about winning? Tell me about Kherson. How about Kharkiv? A nuclear super-power, the second army, couldn't even take the town of Pisky. Well actually they did, but it took them a month and a half to do it. Pisky had a pre-war population of 6 people but the Russian military made it out to be akin to them having taken Kyiv. Some elite forces were in those battles that Russia lost, not just a bunch of 55-year old vets with a sore back and knees and they took heavy losses in terms of men and material. The 1st Tank Guard (the Kremlins cream of the crop), abandoning their armor - they didn't even try to disable them.

all i know is,if it were'nt for biden and nato, putin would own ukraine by now.
Yep, most likely so, and perhaps with preps ready to invade countries neighboring Ukraine...

if biden didnt have interests there in ukraine, maybe he wouldnt have acted at all. let alone sitting back to see if putin was gunna do what he did. which makes me believe even more now that vlad and donnie are brothers from another other. because he wouldnt pull this shit with him in the w.h. and im not saying its a bad thing that they are either,if thats the case. and as far as china and taiwan goess, maybe the u.s. shudda left that alone too. we'd possibly have better relations with china then.
