inhaled analgesics - a question for the Brits

I’m American, @Flatus Tube is a Brit. Fluorinated ether products are most used in a clinical setting. Because they’re volatile they need to be color coded, some require custom fittings because they boil at room temperature
The question is though can they be abused 🤷‍♂️ do they get you high 🤣

@Flatus Tube, @ZeroK, @punkduck, et al.

I believe at least one of you practices in the UK, if not my apologies. If so what do you use as the self-administered inhaled analgesic during delivery? methoxyflurane, nitrous oxide, etc?

thanks!

We use a nitrous oxide/ air mix administered via a breath actuated valve. It’s used in labour ward, emergency and orthopaedic departments and in our ambulances. My wife and I had a right laugh every time the midwife left the room during the births of our two kids, literally.

I used to own a whipped cream charger to puff on nitrous via balloons but a law was passed in the UK making it harder to purchase the nitrous capsules.

You can, as already hinted at, get a similar effect with the air around us. Taking 10-15 full breaths, forced all the way in and out quickly, and on the last breath hold it in and push the blood to your head by tensing your body causes a decent NOS buzz. Best done sat down safely lol.

Came in because I'm British, left because I'm not a doctor. 👋🏻

Someone is, I see discarded whippit cartridges all the time.

Australia has the green whistle, I've seen it on bonding rescue lots of times as pain relief. I think we have it but I've not seen it used before.
Inhaling heroin through a foil tube or "tooter" also can work as a pain relief. And sleep aid
I wanted to post something similar first but Bill said 'in labour' which means a woman gets a child (I believe). Don't know if it's a good idea to give H in this situation to someone who's not used to it. She will maybe barf across the room  nod off or worse shit.
But in general, you're right.
Only the 'sleep aid' doesn't work well for me, I have to use the much weaker morphine to get a good sleep at night. H would make me awake again.

They do use pethidine or morphine with birthing mothers. You just need to ensure it’s early enough in the labour that the baby doesn’t pop out all doped up as they don’t start breathing properly.

I started my ‘life story’ in rehab with “I entered the world high on opiates and I’m now in rehab for the same thing”. The midwife gave my mum a large dose of pethidine too close to me popping out without asking her and I was off me tits and took a while to breath. It does make me wonder if that initial experience started some of the pathways towards my addiction lol.

Ahh.. I get memories of a rehab in 2001.
It was mandatory there to write your own story (free topic, but no 'how I almost OD' or similar), and one day you had to read it in front of the whole group (~30).
You got interesting stories to hear over the months. But whacky stuff too; a strange religious (sect) guy read a tale about how he met his first girlfriend, etc. but it was 1:1 copied from a nasty porn magazine in their typical language. The female therapist was not amused and everyone broke out in laughter, maybe this was the aim to tell such a story.
