See no evil. 2022. Denmark.
4/10
A family from Holland go to stay with a family from Denmark.
Good psychological horror with a overall excellent look to all the scenes and the way the actors gradually ramp up the tension.
The film is captivating within the first ten minutes, a steady pace of 'uncomfortable' it keeps the viewer hooked.
At about the 35 min mark, it was kind of predictable as to where the story was going. It maintains a 'real life' horror feel, but with just dread and nothing else to offer it wasn't hard to be kind of underwhelmed.
Clicked thru to the end, wasn't surprised.

The Kingdom (series 1 and 2) 1994. Dir. Lars Von Trier.
8/10
A haunted hospital.
Great series of four episodes per season. Establishes the characters and a series of plot lines and follows them thru to the end.
Reasonably equal parts drama, comedy and horror make it a interesting watch with it going thru all the plot lines.

Just watched Speak No Evil. I'd give it a 3.5/5 stars. (Which is a pretty high rating for me to give.) It was dark and rather compelling to watch - the kind of movie you need to rewind multiple times for full clarity. The vibe is somewhat reminiscent to Midsommar. The end scene with the parents is CRAZY GOOD - couldn't take my eyes away from it. Very well acted and directed - no holes or implausible pieces. Really really good! 👍🏻

Bedevilled. 2010. South Korea.
10 outta fucking 10.
Revenge tale, but more than that.
A single professional woman living in Seoul is told to take a holiday after a incident at her work. She goes back to an island where she lived when she was a child and reunites with her friend.
Second time watching and there is no doubt is a classic film. Slow but intense, it portrays the main lead as successful, but someone who will not 'lend a hand' to others. This is shown in the opening scene when a young woman is being bashed by some punks and she just winds up the window of her car instead of helping her. As she comes to see, her friend has had a far worse life. There are strong points being made about the way men view and treat women and it's completely reasonable. But it also makes a subtle points about older women who are in positions to help, but do nothing.
Overall, an excellent film that packs a punch. More that just a basic 'single woman gets raped, left for dead, kills those responsible' film.

Just watched this recommendation. And I'd give it 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Really really good. Excellent depiction of traditional Asian culture and how it translates into a today type setting. Awesome revenge and gore. Great message and incredible ending. @Jon E(vil) know's what he's talking about with movies!

The invisible guest. Spain 2016.
10/10
A bloke found in a hotel room with a dead woman has to arrange his defense with a lawyer.
Excellent crime thriller that slowly cranked up the tension. By carefully laying out the details for the lawyer, which then visually make up the 'flashbacks' that fill out the story. As it progresses it really lays out what could be considered a proper grilling from a top lawyer. No detail is overlooked and it becomes a real game of how the bloke will get out of the situation, or not.

Ginger snaps. 2000.
6/10
Teenage girl turns into a werewolf.
Good 'coming of age' horror. Interesting film about two sisters, one who gets attacked and the other who tries to save her. Light hearted tone throughout with typical teen angst. Not a serious watch, but deserving of its cult classic status.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck! The Invisible Guest was INCREDIBLE! The ending was jaw dropping. My jaw actually dropped. I thought I had it all figured out but I was wrong. This one gets 4.5/5 stars! So fucking good!
Amazing flick!

Athena. 2022. France.
5/10
A young lad is killed and the area where he lives goes into full riot mode.
Interesting but shallow film about a 'estate' complex dominated by poor migrates. It sets it up nicely with the surviving three brothers each having taken a different path. There are long scenes filmed in one take, police battling with the youths, this adds a nice level of tension. It soon becomes apparent thou they it must have been done with drone mounted cameras. It slows down after a while and lost my attention.
Overall a decent film about minorities being hammered by the law.

Helter skelter. 2012. Japan.
6/10
Famous models mental breakdown due to ageing.
A character says the phrase 'helter skelter' in the context of total chaos. This is somewhat evident in what happens to the main character.
The lead character, Lilico, is the most sought after and admired model at this point in time. To keep the image she has regular surgery, openly flaunts her good looks and is a prick to anyone around her. A small part of the plot is a criminal investigation in the hospital providing the surgery.
Slow moving with a run time of two hours, the first shows her lifestyle. Second is the inevitable downfall.
Very colorful and hyped, it shows the danger of believing ones own hype, the compliant assistants and media that manipulate the consumer to build that hype, continue to profit and exploit the downfall of the 'product' they have created and then, repeat the formula.

No english subtitles.

Hunt. 2022. South Korea.
8/10
There is a spy in a high level government position.
Good political thriller with bookend action set pieces. Typical of what S.K. can produce with an insane level of intrigue. It made the film interesting but hard to follow, this didn't detract from the viewing experience, it just means the viewer has to concentrate on what is happening.
Set in 1983 while S.K. is still under a dictatorship, it shows the level of violence that was dealt out to anyone being 'questioned'. It was pretty harsh, lots of beatings. The action scenes has a hollywood feel to them, lots of guns, quick editing and ALOT of dead bodies. The plot thou was still all their own.

Nothing compares. 2022.
10/10
Doco about Sinead OʼConnor.
Excellent honest doco with recreations of some childhood memorys and certain moments. Intercut with footage and images of OʼConnor throughout her career. Never a fan of her music, but having seen her albums advertised on TV and hearing nothing compares, alot, i could appreciate her talent. The whole picture of the pope thing was reported her, but i don't remember it being discussed why. I doubt her reason for doing it was ever really explained at the time. The doco lays it out. Shows some of the retarded backlash and what happened when she went on stage at Bob Dylan anniversary concert.
Narrated in part by OʼConnor with other voices, it shows a quiet, shy woman who was talented singer that found a way to express herself and, to her credit, wasn't going to preform or dress like a fucking puppet for the masses.

Hellrasier. 2022.
2/10.
A addict unlocks the puzzle box.
The movie lost me at the point the 'addict' had opened the puzzle and was trying to out run the cenoibites in a van, with a bloke driving, her yelling, various passengers. Up until then it was over the top serial drama 90 horrors shit. I hated it within 10mins. I couldn't see how the character could defeat Pinhead.
Entertaining to some excruciating for others.

Miss Zombie. 2014. Japan.
7/10
A wealthy family gets a zombie.
Slow film with a run time of just 90mins. In black and white for all but a small part at the end, it says more with the visual style than what dialogue is spoken by the actors. The film has several repeating points, the scrubbing being just one. Throughout it there are hints that the zombie knows something of the life before. Its how the zombie and certain people react to it that, after a slow start, makes it quite a interesting film.

The net. 2016. South Korea.
7/10
Drama about a north korean fisherman whose net gets caught in his outboard motor and his drifts to south korea.
The film is dialogue heavy with alot of being scenes of questioning and then the agents assigned to his case talking about what there going to do.
It portrays what could be considered the normal way in which the south treat 'defectors'. Which was to question them enough to satisfy them that the person was not a spy. From there offer them a job and citizenship. Plot wise this hinged on one bloke trying to elicit a confession that he was a spy, when all the fisherman wants to do is go back to his family. There was consistent amount of tension and despair through out the film. Which built to grinding head near the end of the film when he did get to go back.

Bullet train. 2022.
.
Purely out of curiosity i took a look at it, Brad Pitts a good actor. It was a colourful, 'entertaining', witty action movie that had some funny moments. But i largely clicked thru it. It was the essence of 'popcorn film'. Colourful, 'entertaining', witty
