Serious Fear of death

Hey everyone,
Since all of us here are familiar with death I would like to ask a question to all of you. Honestly, death is something I fear a lot and even though the fear might be rational or irrational, I haven’t found a way to deal with it/way of looking at it yet. This is my reaching out to you guys to give me reasons to not be afraid of death. Sharing personal stories, theories or way of looking at it is more than welcome!

Thank you in advance, and if you make fun of me…well, fuck you :lulz:

I’ve watched a staggering number of people take their last breath. Mostly cancer patients or frail elderly people who were receiving end of life care. However, I have also seen a significant number of people die following trauma or other sudden terminal events such as heart problems or bleeds.

Even if there was a degree of pain or psychological distress due to the mode of death, in the last moments everyone becomes serene. The ones that have a spiritual awakening during their final illness always have a good and peaceful death.

Therefore, I do not fear death. I don’t want to die any time soon as I want to experience more and ensure my kids get the most out of what I can teach them. But at the same time, I wouldn’t ‘fear’ death at any point.

I can’t say what happens after death. But if there is a ‘bright light’ I will definitely be heading into it.

I watched someone very close to me die. He went in to an unconscious state for a couple of days before he died and at the end he took two sharp intakes of breath opened his eyes really wide breathed out and he was gone and I always wondered why. Do you have any idea?

I struggled with this also. Not knowing how to accept/deal with the fact that we will one day die. I'll tell you how I think you should approach this and how you should look at it. The biggest thing that brought my mind to ease was thinking about the fact that I wasn't scared for the last 14 billion years the universe has been around? We didn't even know existence existed, up until you were born and breathed consciousness you had no idea the world was turning. 100 million years passed as if it was a long weekend. Spend time worrying about the things you have control over. Reminds me of the meme where people are freaking out because they found out the sun will explode in some 9 billion years. Or that the universe will eventually suffer a heat death or big crunch. You and me both will die brother. But guess what. We weren't alive for 10 billion years, and we didn't complain once. Enjoy what time you have here. Among the living.

That’s the kind of death I’ve seen most frequently, and would be what I’d hope to experience when my time comes. It’s why I think there may be some form of transcendence and will head towards ‘the light’ if I see it (I don’t mean in a biblical heaven type way). It’s almost like they see something at the moment just before death, something peaceful and nice. Sometimes I’ve seen people smile and reach out in front of themselves just before death.

Medically speaking, there are phases of dying with corresponding changes in breathing. In the last moments breathing slows and becomes shallow, with periods of apnoea (not breathing) followed by gasps. This may be a reflex in a similar way to how we have to take a big breath after holding our breath for a long time. However, I prefer to think in line with my first paragraph after lots of ‘spiritual’ learning over the past couple of years and experiencing what I’ve seen in dying patients.

I think Ive said this before, but I have been present at a few deaths, and there is absolutely a tangible difference that goes beyond the stopping of a heart at the time of death. Something is no longer there that was once there. And I was not even really emotionally connected to the people dying so it wasn't wishful thinking....something real was missing from the room. So I 100% believe there is more.

My biggest fear is that I lose consciousness of my previous life, that I lose what makes me myself wherever it is I end up going. If I lose me then it may as well be black nothingness once we die....there might as well be nothing else. And that terrifies me.
