Pay it forward with beer

I am better than you!
I was in my early twenties, and I was buying my groceries and cheap beer. A friendly older guy asked me why I was drinking such swill? I told him that I was just starting out living on my own and I was working my first real job. I told him life as an adult, has more bills then I thought.

He takes my grocery cart, and says I was once just like you when I was younger. He upgraded my hotdogs to steaks, puts back the Bologna, and gets me roast beef from the deli. He loads my cart with good food I would have liked to have been able to afford at the time. Then he put a case of good German beer in the cart.
Told me he is paying for it, won’t take no for an answer. He said what he wants me to do is if some day I am doing well financially, that I one day do the same thing for another man starting out In life.

Today I am proud to say with tears in my eyes I did the same thing for a very appreciative young man today.

In my first job at a cellphone store an older man once gave me a $20 tip for doing bassic software updates on his phone. I told him $20 was alot for what I did, and he bassically told me the same story as yours. Years later long after getting a new career I went to a store and a young kid did some basic customer service for me, so I gave him a $20 tip, he told me it was alot, I told him the same story, and thus the cycle continues. The culture we live in is the one we make for ourselves.

I was driving my Landcruiser back from Melbourne to Darwin one stinking hot summer and was just passing through Tennent Creek, in the middle of the Northern Territory about 1000km south of Darwin, when I saw an old homeless white guy going through the rubbish bins. I had a rush of generosity go over me and drew up alongside him and handed him a $50 note. He took it, said nothing, put it in his pocket and kept on digging into the bins...

Nice but not beautiful...

Still, we don't do this for acknowledgement... or do we?

How does one define true altruism, if in fact there really is such a thing?

Not sure I trust this story to be true. Hmmmm. Tell us more. I mean maybe package labels if you dare?
What does that even mean... package labels?

Amd it most likely IS true ALOT of good people do the pay it forward thing with shopping or buying things for someone in need at the time. Ive done it, lots of my mates have too AFTER someone has sincerley done it for us at different points in our lifes 😁😋

I'm skeptical of this story as well ... its one thing to give a large tip or pay for someone's order in the drive through but to insist on changing the contents of someone's grocery cart seems excessive and strange

Well I guess it really can be said that there are really no "selfless" acts, that every action we perform is to gain something. Even doing something thoughtful for others usually is done to make ourself feel like better people or to be seen in a positive light by others, fulfilling our need for approval.

Though I find this outlook to be true, I choose to see the good in people whenever possible because it makes me feel better! A bit selfish I know...😉

That homeless guy seems like a douche , he's probably damaged beyond repair, but whether you like to downplay your kind actions or not, you did something very kind for another human being in need, that really is a nice thing.

That's the nature of life though isn't it? Every action that life performs is to gain something.
But here us humans are, swimming against the tide of nature and trying to fight it.

I shouldn't have smoked that whole joint.🤣
