other wise known as a "coffin box".
but yes. your supposed to shore up or stabilize the earth. anything deeper 4feet/1.22meters. here in the states, its an OSHA requirement.

idk what you do,but i do concrete/form work. and when ever im in a situation like that,theres always a safety guy present to make sure the shoring is doing its job. especially if it rained earlier. even though it is shored up or theres tie backs. i still think about shit like this. how can you not?
