Meaning of 2001: A Space Odyssey? šŸš€

Just watched it for the first time last night. I know I know I should have seen it earlier and I’ve seen and very much enjoy Stanley Kubrick other films (Paths of Glory, The Shining, Doctor Strangelove, come to mind) but I’ve never had such a ā€œwhat the fuck was that and what does it meanā€ kind of mood as the credits played. The movie is just eye candy from start to finish, i can’t believe it was made in 1968 ten years before Star Wars. The films seems to show a kind of evolution. It starts with early man then space then who knows after Dave goes after Hal. I don’t really have any more thoughts on what it mean’s because I have no clue lol which maybe is the point idk. I’m in a state of pleasurable stupification over it.

Id like to hear your thoughts on what you think of the film and what it means???? Also thoughts about Kubricks work in general are welcome!

PS: The NewsPads shown in the film are one of the most accurate future predictions ever, in the film it’s looks like they are scrolling through iPads as we do now in the morning rather than a newspaper. Not often things are so spot on in future tech predictions.

I remember watching this for the first time, when I was about 14 or 15 years old. There was an old theater that played old movies, and the guy would do double feature deals. He did a Stanley Kubrik themed one with Full Metal Jacket and Space Odyssey 2001, so me and some friends decided to go check it out (we all had watched Full Metal Jacket before, but not on the big screen). We got pretty stoned before we went in, and we couldn't stop talking about the movie afterwards. It blew our young minds and made us start to contemplate our own existence in the universe. Excellent film for anyone who hasn't watched it before (it's kind of slow paced by today's standards).

The film is a depiction of the entire human experience from our initial evolution as bipedal sentient primates progressing to civilized primates and then on further to finally reach our potential as intergalactic travelers.
But if it’s a depiction of the entire human experience then how does it jump from early human to future spaceflight, likes what’s the in between?

I’ve seen that one as well and it’s awesome. It would be a great short film if it just was the training but then it goes on.

I would suggest (and agree) that the author infers that there are only been two significant moments in human history.
  1. We gained sentience through neuro-cognitive evolution that resulted in frontal lobe development providing us with an ability to know 'future' while experiencing existential dread.
  2. We evolved to such an extent technologically that we 'approach' light speed travel and our fate is not longer bound to this planet and thus our existence is not as finite as the life span of our sun.
This is simply my personal bullshit response....

Ive never seen it. Is this the one where the guy makes a mountain out of mashed potatoes?
Have you watched Kubrick generally?

I’ll check it out then!
Please try to remember to come back here and tell me what you think dude! 😊

I see where you are coming from, I’ll definitely watch it again as it seems to be the movie where you catch new things each time you watch it.

Kubrick said the man spent his life in a room constructed by space aliens who constructed it from their loose understanding of French architecture. It was like he was in their zoo. He had no sense of time and when he died he was transformed into some higher form of energy. I just like the imagery of the old man eating in the lighted room. All I know for sure is he had an awesome looking dinner roll.

Ira about how we were given the ability to evolve by aliens who come back 200,000 years later to continue our next step, the next movie was the next part... The books have a 3rd tale.. Kubricks visions are amazing.. That movie still is visually stunning
