Who is Evil? The Serpent or God?

This has always made me question the Christian version of things. The Gnostic Christians believed that the god (little g) that created man was the evil being created by a true God (Big G) and the Serpent was the Good being. That man's creator has portrayed itself as a Big G God to mankind, when in reality it was just an advanced species ruler so that they would worship him.
Then you have the Garden of Eden deal where god has told man NOT to eat from the Tree of Knowledge or they will be cast out.
Then the Serpent shows up and tells Adam and Eve that they have the spark of Divinity within them and if they eat from the Tree of Knowledge, they will become self-aware. He told them that now, they are just like the animals, unaware of their true self. Then they ate the Fruit and noticed their nakedness, basically becoming aware of self. The Gnostics say that the Serpent was the one who brought mankind out of being just an animal and into being an aware being.
It sounds like the Serpent was the one who helped us out and god actually wanted us to remain animals in his Garden along with the rest. I don't go to church and am not religious, and this contradiction reinforces that.
I think the Gnostics were on to something.

Alright, so Adam and Eve basically had free will and a conscious. Though they lacked understanding. So essentially they were being tamed by God to become Gods like God and the Others who ate from the tree of Life and knowledge. But the obedience of the subjects which God creates is always being put to the test. Therefore the variables are added which test the obedience. Snake aka Devil was added to the Garden before Eve and Adam, likely one of God's first test subjects. The Devil had consumed both fruits the fruit of life and the fruit of knowledge. So when the Devil witnessed Adam and Eve's creation there was immense jealousy and the Devil deliberately interfered with the Test and this is why we have our first Testament stemming from this interaction. Now if Adam and Eve could have resisted the temptations of the Devil they would have been able to eat off the tree of life and become immortal and the tree of knowledge to have both is to be like God. Once the Devil makes its way into the life and hearts of man it through temptations makes the subject a failure before God. It is the perfect variable in the sense that only the perfect being can truly resist the temptations which is how Jesus resisted Satan. Mind you God the Heavenly Father Never had to eat the fruit of life or knowledge as all is eternal and omnipresent with the God of creation.
