I think that dog needs to trust its own senses more than the master.

My dog knows all the sounds of the cars we have, my wifes, my son's and mine.

If I'm home and see Ruby's ears go up I know someone is about to drive in. Even though I can't hear it.

last year, i was walking my dog at 3 a.m. on a dark, paved bike trail...
i picked up my dog's "donation" and when i stood up, there was a huge wolf standing right behind him
it TOWERED over my king shepherd...
my dog had no idea, he just stood there, looking up at me, wagging his tail...
i backed away, reeling in my leash, then turned and ran, and my dog never looked back once, he had no clue that thing snuck up on him

i got goose bumps telling this story...
i have stayed on the sidewalks ever since.
the point is, you and your dog got to have each other's back...
