Ego lifting just causes injuries. Good technique with lower weights, initiating in a full stretch, control the eccentric (negative) movement fully, and you get better results with no injuries.

I’ve moved to a seated chest press plate loaded machine these days. You can safely get to failure with no need for a spotter.

When you do a bench press do you lower it over the nipple area? My wrestling, American football and jujitsu coaches all advised this technique as it’s the same motion as pushing someone off you.

When I do bench, I do lower it in line with the nipples. I lower it over 2 seconds to really milk the eccentric and don’t lock out at the top of the concentric to keep continuous tension in the muscles.

Old school techniques work well. However, I’m getting better results on a plate loaded seated press, with dumbbell incline presses for upper pectoral development and cable flies to sculpt the pecs, currently with a lower pec focus (I switch everything round every few weeks).
