A congressional hearing has ended abruptly after a clash between Democratic and Republican representatives.

The clash came during a recent House committee hearing when Republican Representative Keith Self referred to transgender Representative Sarah McBride as “Mr McBride”.

Sarah McBride is the United States’ highest ranking openly transgender elected official and the first openly transgender member of the US congress.

Democrat Representative Bill Keating responded in a heated fashion; demanding Keith Self introduce Ms McBride the “right way”.

“Chairman you are out of order, Mr Chairman have you no decency, I’ve come to know you a little bit, but this is not decent.

“You will not continue it with me unless you introduce a dually elected representative the right way.”

Following Keating’s comments, Representative Self adjourned the meeting abruptly.
