Serious British tourist in custody at Tacoma ICE detention center for weeks

By Paige Cornwell
Seattle Times staff reporter

A British tourist who had been traveling through the U.S. has been in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention in Tacoma for about two weeks after she was denied entry into Canada, according to ICE and social media posts from the woman’s family.

Rebecca Burke, 28, is detained at the Northwest ICE Processing Center “related to the violation of the terms and conditions of her admission,” an ICE spokesperson said in a statement. ICE did not detail what terms and conditions she allegedly violated.

According to a Facebook post from her father, Paul Burke, Rebecca Burke tried to cross the U.S.-Canada border on Feb. 26 for the next leg of her backpacking trip. She was denied entry to Canada because of incorrect visa paperwork and when she tried to return to the U.S., she was instead handcuffed and taken to the Tacoma detention center, Paul Burke wrote.

“What was meant to be a life-changing four-month backpacking trip across North America has turned into a nightmare,” Paul Burke wrote on Facebook.

Paul Burke called Rebecca’s living condition “deeply concerning,” saying she, a vegan, is “surviving on a diet of cold rice, potatoes, and beans.” ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Paul Burke’s Facebook post.

“Becky is a kind, adventurous young woman who simply wants to return home to her family,” Paul Burke wrote, using Rebecca’s nickname.

Paul Burke told the BBC that Canadian authorities were concerned Rebecca would work illegally. Rebecca had occasionally helped with household chores in return for free lodging, Paul Burke told the British outlet.

The British Foreign Office said it’s aware of a British national detained in the U.S. and is in contact with local authorities.

Burke is a London-based comic artist and illustrator. Her Instagram shows her journey through Seattle in the days leading to her detention. In her stories, she posted about visiting the Museum of Pop Culture, Mount Rainier National Park and the Washington Park Arboretum. Her last photo, of a comic book she had purchased, was posted shortly before she was taken into custody.

Fucking good, law breaking cunt. Don't get no fucking sympathy anymore. " four-month backpacking trip across North America"

"For travellers from almost all the countries of the European Union, but as well for travellers from Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Japan, San Moreno, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the U.K., such visitors can enter the U.S. under the Visa Waiver program and can stay for a maximum period of 90 days."

According to @Bad Hippo just because the moron was british she's above the law. 😆
Entitled piece of shit.

This brings back memories, the Canadian Border Guards pulled my car to the side 3x in a row (separate trips) and searched it up and down, inside and out. Once i had a baggie hidden and another time some un-declared booze, but of course they never found it.

For my annual summer trip this year, I was thinking of taking US 50 from Ocean City, Maryland to Sacramento, California, then go up the beautiful California Coast and take the Trans-Canada Hwy to return, but not if this United States-Canadian feud intensifies. Maybe i'll simply remove my US flag and replace it with the Maple Leaf to trick the retards for the interim.

@Sabu, if you can manage to get another paid day off, maybe we can do lunch...knowing i'm so close, it would be a shame not to meet such an interesting character.

She broke the law....oh and she's vegan, good enough reasons to giver her some detention, the stupid liberal cunt.
She looks like the type to lay down in front of traffic and throw soup at priceless pieces of art....

Those Canadians have to protect the housekeeping jobs of all those Indian and Chinese imports one way or another!

Reads like she doesn't have enough money to support herself if in Canada or America, sleeping on couches in exchange for vaccuming floors and/or dicks isn't a travel plan. That's a drifter.

Wtf wrong with you? We are above the treasonous American laws! We fucking owned that country and you needed outside help to beat a island that at the time!
We owned most of the world and it was doing great, and all the peasants wanted freedom and look how shit the world is now we gave everyone independence,
Ungrateful motherfuckers!
But she’s vegan so fuck her 😂🤣😂
