I'm guessing the other side leads out to a bigger area for them. They may have an idea of when feeding time is, or maybe that's why he whistles; so they hear him and come over that way. I don't know.

It's not so terrible considering they're ambush predators. Snakes, spiders, and things never really want to move around much except for the obvious. Danger, looking for a mate, taking a bite weekly drink of water, if they don't already get it from their food. They'll sit for weeks and weeks in one spot waiting for prey to happen across them in the wild.

It's why releasing snakes in the wild is terrible on local fauna, especially pythons. They'll sit in a mud hole without eating for close to a month, and you're never going to catch it on a trail cam to find it again. They do very well and breed like maniacs whenever they escape or are let go.
