They are ambush predators. They aren't actually that great if you can see or hear them ahead of time. And we've bread dogs to be real sons of bitches. Stronger than normal prey drive, high agility, quicker reflexes, and boldness.
That's why we have the idiom, it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog.
