The man, Bradford James Gille, is a known schizophrenic. He was a mental patient in a hospital but was released for some reason and became a homeless vagrant.
He published two books, "The Book of I Jesus Christ" and "If Then To Awaken As the One True King of Kings and Lord of Lords" in which he describes his mental illness in a first person narrative. In short, he believed himself to be Jesus. His stabbing spree was perhapse his attempt at bringing about the Apocolypse probubly.

You're right, trolleys can be TANKS! they used a trolley in Melbourne a few years back to disable a raging maniac. (they have to be those older metal ones)
