It reminds me of the Blanche Monnier case. Monnier was sane when she was locked away. She lost her sanity after years in captivity.
Whether the guy was crazy or not at the start of his captivity, doing that to your own son is the lowest of the low 💔

Mentally ill or challenged..? In either circumstance it's wrong.. What if he's mentally ill and he did something horrific?? In that case I assume the village and family would Lynch him? What if the father is so full of it because they're third world and the son is challenged and they all think it's better if he'd be locked up.. now that's some shit... ☹️ Idk I'm drunk...

I'm not sure if he is mentally ill or mentally disabled. Either way, it's heartbreaking.
I did question if he has done something horrific.. but that doesn't justify leaving him naked in a cage, starving to death. If that is the case, he should be put into professional care or handed over to the authorities(depending on the potential crime).
I'm swaying towards their fucked up third world mindset. Can't have a mentally ill person in our family.. "it bring dishonour to our famiry".
I have a very close family member who is mentally challenged. Blood is blood. You stick by them. It's challenging for everyone. You go through trial and error everyday until you find a system and routine that works for everyone. Making sure they have clothes, food, water, a bed and medical care are the basic necessities. If they can't even do that, they don't give a shit imo. Sad asf.

I was considering what if he was like doped out of his mind at one point and ate his toddler sister alive or something; that type of unforgivable thing but I do believe as you stated it's a situation where he's challenged and it's considered a "dishonor" in that case very disappointing..... Myself, my daughter and other family members are autistic. Several of us have adhd too. You would never know unless it's mentioned though. We fit in with neurotypicals regardless of our differences. I think it has a lot to do with how we were treated while growing up. If he is autistic, it makes me wonder how he would behave if only he wasn't treated like a feral animal..

I did a search and found quite a few results of Asian parents locking up their offspring (however, not this specific case). From the stories it appears the parents had no idea how to deal with the a-social behaviour of their children. Some of them saw doctors, but then the bill to pay for treatment, let alone, permanent residency in an institution proved too high, so there you go: they locked them up in home styled cages.

Perhaps in "survival" situations, where people live on the extreme side of life, where there is literally not a penny to spare for anything else but the bare necessities, empathy and the wish to care are thin; the kid is a burden, thus a threat to their own existence, thus a "worthless" item - killing the kid (like birds may remove the weakest hatchlings from the nest) is no option for obvious reasons, so the next best solution is to remove him/her from sight and mind, ignoring the fact that he/she has feelings, a soul and physical needs, IF they even credit the kid with such human traits.
(Mind you, I'm not condoning this "method", just trying to understand.)

I have been psychoanalyzing people since at least 2nd grade, I would always be blatantly truthful with them, and they would always end up much better off and happy after their "sessions" with me, even when were were just kids playing at recess. The most psychologically harmed children I came to know were the sons of divorced parents who lived exclusively with their mothers. They would have this strong need to vent their frustrations to me, their mothers being incapable of understanding or directing the frustrations of adolescent boys. The female teachers at school would also be ill equipped to "deal" with their psycological struggles. I had "patients" that would agrandize school shooters, dress in camouflage and write journals speaking about how they wanted to kill people and themselves. By the time I was around 15 or so I made the connection between this pent up desire for violence and its inherent existence in the minds of young males. Males who grew up in a home and school structure administered with no male influence, fell victim to this. This seemed to be the overarching problem - lack of males teaching males how to be men and an over inundation of females teaching males to act like females. When a female influence in a position of authority incessantly tells a boy to "stop running" or "stop playing with sticks" or "stop climbing" and instead forces them to "act more like the well behaved girls" sitting and reading, making friendship bracelets, and painting their nails it litterally breaks the boy psychologically. They believe their inherent pursuit of typical male behaviors, such as playing with sticks or merely running, is bad behavior and then instead of playing physically they internalize their perceived "badness", "why am I always in trouble?" "Why do I always get yelled at?" "Why am I getting bad grades?" "I MUST BE BAD!" and with no outlet to express these feelings they internalize them - creating worlds in their heads often full of extreme ideas that prove their masculinity. When that "trans" shooter shot up the Catholic school yesterday I had already inferred the reason, no male influence in his life, a single mother as his sole caregiver, years of strict regimented learning in a school, and now we learn from his manifesto that he didn't want to be "a woman" anymore, he wanted to be a man again, but he was so psychologically destroyed he felt he could only do so in a deranged manner - what he perceived to be a masculine thing to do - murder people. This is the end result of the unchecked feminization and aggrandizement of anti-masculinty upon the psyche of adolescent boys. My theory anyway. Also I realise this may sound like a giant unrelated tangent to your statment about being nero divergent, but understand that was the entire reason for me playing psychologist as a kid and being able to see and understand what "normal" people could not.
