Look up the Saar Offensive, the little discussed French fiasco that happened in September of 1939. The French litterally invaded Germany, with forces 10:1 against the Germans, got to the lightly defended Siegfried Line, and then just gave up and left back to France. Hitler didn't even bother sending extra troops there, he had litterally just started invading Poland, and the French just abandoned their offensive in the West for no reason other than they were afraid. They were afraid of Germany when Germany didn't even have armies in the West to meet them in battle. The Germans litterly dispelled France from their territory without even sending a single battalion from the East. Hitler was so confident in the French cowardice he sent everything into Poland on the opposite side of the country, leaving the western front open. Then after he was done with Poland Hitler pushed into France so quickly that Rommel litterally found his entire armoured division behind enemy lines cut off from the German infantry and supply lines - they invaded too fast, and won anyway. WWII could easily have ended there but UK had Churchill who was stubborn and wanted to fight to the end - he even bombed the French, sank a huge part of their Navy, thousands of sailors dead, more damage than the Nazis did, but we aren't supposed to talk about that.
