Wonder if that's the Congo River or one of its tributaries. That river is so ancient that the chimps on one side are genetically different from the chimps on the other, one species being the proper chimpanzees while the others are the Bonobos. I read an article that stated the genetic differences between Bonobos and Chimpanzees is solely a result of the Congo River deciding their population which means there was a time before the river split their evolutions. The two creatures can interbreed you see, and such breeding creates a hybrid which can also breed, so if the congo river was ever bridged both Chimps and Bonobos could turn into a one large hybrid species. Since this hasn't happened we know the river hasn't had any bridges, not even ones made by nature. The Congo interior is truly primordial, even now there are likely countless undiscovered creatures in there.
