I never asked him about hitting the head on rough seas though.

My dad was on British merchant ships in the 1950s. Some didn't have foul water tanks and discharged all sewage into the sea. There was a weighted flapper on each side of the ship. He said one time a flapper broke and fell off, leaving an open route from fresh air into the crew bathroom on that side of the ship. In rough seas, he said when it rolled one side, you had to sit, shit and slam the lid - before it rolled to the flapperless side and sea water blasting up the pipe to wash your arse.

My dad was in the naval reserve in Aus and worked in shipping all his life as a ship broker.

It was through him I got my working passage back from Rotterdam to Melbourne.

i remember the ship going thru a bad storm on my way to Bermuda...i had my Indian servant bring me tea and then went out on my front deck to watch the show...the waves were breathtaking and i kept thinking if i were in the water i'd be dead soon enough instead of sipping tea.

The Power of Mother Nature has always impressed me. We're mere insects crawling on the surface of the Earth compared with her.
