US Marines & Coast Guard Seizing Shadow-Fleet/Sanctioned Oil Tankers (5 vids)

The Trumpo Admin is authorizing the seizure of a number of shadow-fleet oil tankers (mostly crude carriers, including one registered with Russia and that had a sub escorting it).

Vid 1a: Full version. US forces seize a Russian-flagged Venezuelan shadow-fleet tanker the 'Marinera', formerly 'Bella 1', carrying Iranian oil. The US Navy had been chasing this one for just over 2 weeks. In the North Atlantic, early Jan 2026.

Vid 1b: Shorter version, diff angle (same seizure as above ^).

"United States forces boarded and seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the Atlantic Ocean Wednesday following a weeks-long chase on the high seas which has escalated tensions with Moscow and piled further pressure on its ally Venezuela.

The aging, rusting tanker, originally called the Bella 1, was sanctioned by the US in 2024 for operating within a “shadow fleet” of tankers transporting illicit Iranian oil.

Last month the US Coast Guard attempted to seize the vessel while it was heading to Venezuela to pick up oil, then operating under the flag of Guyana. But the ship’s crew refused to be boarded and made an abrupt turn into the Atlantic.

The Bella 1’s crew later painted a Russian flag on its side, and it appeared in a Russian shipping register under a new name, the Marinera.

US officials later said Moscow had dispatched a submarine to escort the vessel as it sailed toward Europe, threatening a possible confrontation between Washington and the Kremlin.

Here’s what we know.
Where and how was the Bella 1 seized?

The US repositioned military assets to the UK ahead of seizing the tanker, CNN has reported.

V-22 Osprey aircraft were active in the UK over the past several days, with flight data appearing to show them running training missions in the UK out of Fairford air base. And two AC-130 gunships were seen arriving at Mildenhall base in the UK on Sunday.

The Bella 1 was seized Wednesday roughly 190 miles off the southern coast of Iceland in the northern Atlantic Ocean, according to ship-tracking website MarineTraffic. The site shows the tanker taking a sharp turn south around the time that it was reported seized.

Russia’s Transport Ministry confirmed that it lost contact with the tanker after US forces boarded the ship at 7 a.m. ET.

US Navy SEALs were among the forces that boarded the tanker after they were transported to the ship by the US Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, also known as the “night stalkers,” according to two people briefed on the operation.

US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said the crew of the US Coast Guard Munro had pursued the ship for weeks “across the high seas and through treacherous storms.” However, it’s unclear if the ship in the RT footage is the Munro.

Ahead of the vessel’s seizure, the Russian military had started to move around naval assets and a submarine to protect the ship, according to a US official. But it’s unclear how close those vessels were to the tanker when it was seized, the source said.

How has Russia responded?

Russia condemned the Bella 1’s seizure, with its transport ministry arguing “no state has the right to use force against vessels that are properly registered in the jurisdictions of other nations” under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, a treaty which the US has not signed.

The country’s Foreign Ministry demanded that the US return the Russian citizens aboard “to their homeland,” according to the Russian state news agency TASS.

TASS also reported Russian lawmaker Leonid Slutsky called the US seizure of the vessel an act of “21st-century piracy” which violates international law.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has yet to comment on the seizure. KVOA

Vid 3: US Navy seizing sanctioned oil tanker the 'Skipper', flying South American flag, carrying Venezuelan crude oil, headed to Cuba. Off the coast of Venezuela, early Dec 2025.

"An oil tanker seized off the coast of Venezuela has arrived near Galveston

The tanker, known as the Skipper, was seized on Dec. 10 amid escalating tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

An oil tanker seized by the United States near Venezuela earlier this month is now close to the Gulf Coast. An online marine traffic tracker on Monday showed the tanker located about 40 miles from Galveston, an island south of Houston.

According to the Greater Houston Port Bureau, the tanker is too large to enter the Houston Ship Channel.

Ed Hirs, an energy fellow at the University of Houston, said the tanker was likely sent to the Galveston area because of its oil infrastructure.

"It's the closest harbor (that's) closest to oil infrastructure on the Texas Gulf Coast," he said. "It's pretty easy to get that oil onto shore."

Hirs said the oil will have to be unloaded to smaller tankers, but what happens after that remains to be seen.

The larger tanker, known as the Skipper, was seized on Dec. 10 amid escalating tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump's administration and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. It’s a conflict that has implications for the oil industry in Houston and beyond.

"I think that's up to maritime law where the oil will go, what the disposition of the tanker will be," Hirs said.

The U.S. Coast Guard referred Houston Public Media to the White House for more information about the tanker's offloading process. The White House did not immediately respond to questions.

The U.S. announced over the weekend that it had seized a second tanker recently departing from Venezuela." HousonPublicMedia

And the latest (footage just released).

Vid 4: US Navy seized the oil tanker 'Veronica', linked to Venezuela, intercepted for a violating quarantine imposed on sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean. Near Aruba. Jan 14 2026.

"US seizes sixth tanker with alleged ties to Venezuela in Trump's effort to control oil

Trump met with executives oil companies last week to discuss his goal of investing €86 billion in Venezuela to repair and upgrade its oil production and distribution.

US forces in the Caribbean Sea have seized another sanctioned oil tanker that the Trump administration says has ties to Venezuela, part of a broader effort by Washington to take control of the South American country’s oil.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrote on social media that the US Coast Guard had boarded the Motor Tanker Veronica early on Thursday.

She said the ship had previously passed through Venezuelan waters and was operating in defiance of President Donald Trump’s "established quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean."

US Southern Command said Marines and sailors launched from the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford to take part in the operation alongside a Coast Guard tactical team, which Noem said conducted the boarding as in previous raids.

The Veronica is the sixth sanctioned tanker seized by US forces as part of the effort by Trump’s administration to control the production, refining and global distribution of Venezuela’s oil products and the fourth since the ouster of President Nicolás Maduro in a surprise nighttime raid almost two weeks ago.

The Veronica last transmitted its location on 3 January as being at anchor off the coast of Aruba, just north of Venezuela’s main oil terminal.

According to the data it transmitted at the time, it was partially filled with crude." EuroNews

Once you got the taste of larceny, it's hard to stop, and oil and a boat is a sweet deal.

Another part of Operation Spearhead that I forgot I had. This one took place after the Skipper had been taken (there might have been a second one this same day).

Quality not the greatest, in terms of seeing the USCG teams grappling down (like in the previous vids) but they can be seen on the deck after a few grappled down.

Centuries

1. "On 20 December, the USCG boarded a second ship, the Panama-flagged Centuries (IMO number 9206310), carrying 1.8 million barrels of crude oil off the coast of Venezuela, reported as "intercepted" by Reuters.

According to The Washington Post, neither the vessel nor its owner are sanctioned entities, and an unnamed source said the boarding was based on a history of the vessel transporting oil to China, and a "right to visit" law that "allows a warship to board and inspect a vessel it suspects is engaging in illicit activity".

Permission to board was obtained from Panama, which later stated that the vessel had violated Panamanian maritime law by turning off its transponder while sailing with crude. Centuries had a history of faking its location.

As of 22 December, it was not clear if the vessel would be released or when." WIKI

2. "Panama’s government plans to discipline several oil tankers flying its flag after U.S. authorities targeted them for breaking rules. Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha made the statement on Friday. He said these ships ignored Panama’s maritime laws. The move comes after the U.S. seized the supertanker Centuries in the Caribbean. Officials suspect the vessel carried Venezuelan crude against global sanctions.

Panamanian probes found that the Centuries and similar ships used shadow fleet tactics to avoid scrutiny. Issues included turning off satellite trackers, repeated hull name swaps, mismatched records, and odd routes after leaving Venezuelan ports, with gaps in tracking. “Panama aims to keep its registry—one of the world’s biggest—clean,” Martínez-Acha said. He stressed that the nation refuses ties to hidden energy trades.

Due to these breaches, the Panama Maritime Authority looks at revoking registrations for the problem ships. This de-flagging stands as Panama’s toughest penalty, leaving a vessel unable to sail legally and shunned by ports worldwide. The Centuries case fits into a wider U.S. push against secret oil hauls. The U.S. Coast Guard has ramped up Caribbean patrols to break up networks moving banned crude from Venezuela, Iran, and Russia.

Beyond the Centuries, the U.S. monitors ships like the Bella 1 [later taken in early Jan 2026 after a chase], linked to evasion methods using convenience flags and identity switches. As the Venezuelan sea blockade tightens under Operation Southern Spear, the U.S. and Panama step up to dismantle the shadow fleet. Yet, U.S. Navy rules bar seizing civilian merchants, so the Coast Guard handles all boardings as the main enforcement arm." TicoTimes

Vid: Trump's actions are certainly stopping Russia from getting some much needed oil (and abt $1.5B in gold reportedly found onboard the Skipper), along with demonstrating USCG's ability to intercept Venezuelan heavy crude shipments (which Venezuela can't refine), prior to Maduro's capture.

Looking forward to the $0.05 drop at the pumps.
Russia certainly miscalculated their forecast of prices of oil (per barrel) when drafting up their budget for 2026, accounting for those forecasts...current prices are about $30 below what they thought they would be (forecast was $67 something but now at around $35-36). You might see a drop in the prices for gas (if that's where you are)...
