Fucking power companies

I live on the east coast of the United States. Not too far from D.C. It was fun growing up and going to school where I'm from because every year, for at least 1 class, we would go to the appropriate Smithsonian museum or go visit The Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, etc... memorials. I'm not going into any politics here. Just saying that's my local and it was fun seeing that shit as a kid, even up into high school. Hell, we would skip school, throw down on an ounce of weed, go to D.C. high as fuck and go to the national air and space museum, to meet girls who were from other schools on field trips 😆

Anywho... now we live in a world where people would rather watch someone else go to these places (or any place on earth really) while laying in the comfort of their bed, with none of the expenses or stresses of travel, on YouTube or whatever. I read something a few years ago about the children of this generation growing up to actually have more memories of what they've seen other people doing online, than they have of their own personal experiences in life. Idfk if that is factual, but it's a weird thought.

As a result of all of the information being created, we have data centers popping up everywhere. I worked in data center valley of the USA last year (not actually for any of the facilities, i was an hoa maintenance man nearby) and it's wild, how quickly they get these facilities up and online. Let me say this, I'm not here to fake the funk and act like I'm smart. I honestly don't really understand what these facilities are storing or are actually doing on an informational level. What i continue to see articles online about though, is the power demand that is being put on the grid, not just in my area, but nationwide.

I hadn't really felt any impact on my personal life... until yesterday afternoon, in the middle of an ice storm, with temps in the single digits on my mountain. We didn't lose power, yet, but the fact that they can just choose to pull the plug on anyone is wild to me. The alert came through the same as a weather emergency or amber alert. My old lady was pissed 😂🤣😆😇. I find it funny, fucking stupid, and kinda spooky, all at the same time.

I'm not really sure why I'm sharing this. I guess I'm just kinda interested in people's thoughts and if this is anything you've experienced in your area yet? It's my understanding, again from what I see on the good ol interweb, that this had happened in a portion of Texas last summer during heat wave.

Also, just cause, I hope any of you that have been impacted by this storm are ok. Stay warm and help your neighbors when possible. Or not. Fuck em, they should have bought a generator...😈😇

Advancement in Ai and its use needs infrastructure to work and be upgraded.
is anything you've experienced in your area yet?
In the summer I'll get messages about power conservation and with water. Not often, only when it's bad.

Maybe all these data centers are the reason copper, silver, and gold are so expensive now - because they need the metal for all the wires and micro processors.
You might be right frfr. Silver been going crazy lately. I'm not a metal guy, but my algorithm feeds me precious metal articles occasionally. I think a lot of people were low key buying while crypto has been trying to get a hold. Then bitcoin went to like 125k and "fell off", if that's what you really wanna call it (at like 94k now 😆) and everyone jumped back into metals recently? Idk, again not trying to sound smarter than I am

My train of thought may be off the rails a bit, but it's weird to me that the information people use has become more valuable than the people who use it 😆.

This was my first electric alert. We've received the drought and wildfire warnings more often the last few years

Right!
People freeze to death, but the data center still running at their expense has safely stored their data and their memories, hooray....

Your not wrong. Information being used for direct advertising, and algorithm suggestions saves companies money in advertising. Even on a political level. Info gets feed to you based on these systems.

Summed it up perfectly!

When the power company cuts my power off I'll live stream my hypothermia setting in and myself freezing to death, but that moment will live on forever because it's stored on a nice warm server that never lost power

People in the tropics can watch the unsettling spectacle of your person freezing to death, themselves completely overwhelmed by the heat, seeing over there the power was cut thus crippling the air conditioning and fans, also to keep the data centers up and running.

power and control. data centers stay up and running while people suffer the ramifications of it. what is so fucking important that ALL these centers stay up and running? i get for natl secutiry files or whatever, but to keep tracking citizens is another thing.
shut my power off because you feel the need to do so,then my food spoils, cause you shut off my fridge? not everyone can afford to have a generator. let alone replace whatever meats/food they lost. shits not cheap any more.
have they fixed the grid in texas so it doesnt happen again? i think not.

While live streaming their heatstroke?

Fyi...I don't own a generator 🙃

WHY I have a Generac on LP gas (can convert to hydrogen and back to gasoline) and a solar array on all the LED lighting here. Can go for weeks if needed.

I live in the Netherlands. About 200 data centers here. Together they use 4.6 percent of the national electricity output. For some reason I have this uncomfortable feeling power cuts due to these power gobblers, might interfere with daily life. So I learned to live without a fridge, without a washing machine, without a boiler, and without heating in the winter. No electric water heater, or coffee maker, I sweep the floors, now and then I use the vacuum cleaner. No microwave thingy, no TV.
I cook on old fashioned petroleum cookers, invented in the 19th century.
(Still four up to date laptops though, lol.)

I commend the dedication. I like to think I'm prepared for some shit, but that's just my American ego telling myself lies lol. It's absolutely better to be proactive, than reactive though.

I'm curious... the fridge thing... is that an underground storage thing or just like canning?

None at all - I live in an apartment block, with balconies and a gallery where the front doors open on. Lacking a fridge you learn all about foods, like which vegetables spoil quickly, how to keep soup for a week, you buy smaller quantities, I never eat canned food, not do I do canning, or preserving in glass jars.

EDIT -- But here comes the grand confession: I actively encourage the data centers to gobble our power because.... I am heavily into AI. Mea culpa.
