Trump's tariffs cost American households $1,000 last year: tax research group

ABC News:

President Donald Trump's tariffs cost the average American household $1,000 last year, according to new research from the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.

The cost is set to go even higher this year to $1,300 per household, assuming the existing tariffs stay in place, the research said.

The research called Trump's tariffs "the largest U.S. tax increase as a percent of GDP since 1993." It suggests the president's signature economic policy is exacerbating cost of living concerns at a time when many households are grappling with persistently high prices.

According to the research think tank Tax Foundation, the federal government collected $264 billion in total tariff revenues in 2025 -- far short of the trillions regularly touted by the White House. The research also finds the tariffs will offset most of the economic benefits of the new tax cuts from Trump's signature tax law that took effect this year.

"America's average tariff rate has increased by nearly tenfold in the past year -- while inflation has actually cooled, real wages have risen, GDP growth has accelerated, and trillions in investments continue pouring in to make and hire in America," White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement to ABC News.

Tariffs, which fluctuated through 2025 as the U.S. struck trade deals, primarily affected the cost of electronics, toys and cars that aren't manufactured domestically and foods that are grown abroad. The price of coffee rose by 33.6%, ground beef by 19.3%, romaine lettuce by 16.8% and frozen orange juice by 12.4%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Tax Foundation data shows the average effective tariff rate in the U.S. has surged from around 2% in 2024 to roughly 10% in 2025, the highest since 1946. The most recent government data shows the annual inflation rate in December was 2.7%, roughly the same rate as when Trump took office.

The problem is the majority of both Democrats and Republicans are of average intelligence which it to say they are bassically retarded and fighting over the wrong issues. The real issue isn't weather it's good or bad to allow "illegal immigrants" into the country but rather weather it's unusual that both parties are controlled by the 1% elite who time and time again failed to pass legislation upholding the rights of all working class people - "illegal" and "non-illegal". The fact that field laborers and house maids are exempt from minimum wage laws, for example. The fact that it is legal for companies to hire "illegal" workers but illegal for those same "illegal" workers to work for them (it sounds ridiculous but it's true). This results in a situation where companies, like Perdu, lobby Democrats in Congress to allow illegal immigrants to enter the country so they can employ them at their chicken farms only to then call ICE, supported by Republicans, who then deport these workers before they are paid a cent - resulting in a form of slavery to take hold in this country under the guise of political allegiances. And who benefits from the constant back and forth of Republican/Democrat game of musical chairs - the 1% who control both those parties, who own those companies like Perdu, who perform the insider trades in Congress because they all know the outcome before it happens, because they make the laws. We common people are not part of the real system, we are merely a noisy powerless cover over it who think we make a difference. And no matter how many times we vote the politicians will simply do whatever they want and what the want is in none of our best interests. We belong to them, and if you believe otherwise, try not filing your taxes this year, try not paying your property taxes, try refusing to go to war when your civil service call comes through, try tearing up your social security card and yelling how you are more than just a number.

Sound’s like a rant against the US Gov. I hear ya. It did not begin with the current Potus.

You know better than that.

This is fine. They started raising prices before the tarrifs even took place because they thought people would just unanimously blame trump for it. They did it with local products as well """"To keep competitive prices for the market"""" and for people to shut up and buy it anyways. The big 4 beef companies colluded to raise beef prices during the tarrifs in the same way. Hell, the price of corn is insane and all you ever see is corn in American ground when you drive across the US.

Now, several smaller beef organizations over 20 states have joined the Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund to start to provide decently priced beef to Americans again. Farmers markets are more competitive in prices as long as you buy in season too, which is what we should be doing anyways.

The food prices globally have skyrocketed further than America too. You even got nips paying 2.5 times as much for green onion, eggs, and fried tofu skins lately. So as bad as it is, thank God we're in the US.

It's not so much against the US government specifically, it's against an institution of beuracoracies that has taken over nearly every civilized nation on Earth - all of which believe and do the same things with their people thinking they are unique when they're not. I'm distracted watching Planet Terror right now so can't explain further at the moment. Look up the 12th century Jurists of South France and research what their actions lead to, and what we continue to live with today.

the older i get the more i feel the US should just continue borrowing to sustain the good-times and piling on to the national debt for three more decades maybe a little less, but then some real belt-tightening needs to be done.
