The problem with modern race based prejudices I believe stems from a misunderstanding of history, you see it wasn't the dichotomy between white and black but between rich and poor that defined the system of exploitation this nation was built on. Poor whites DID work in the fields alongside the blacks - concurrently alongside them.
Overseers, which Hollywood often portrays as cruel white people, where just as often black as they where white. The rich 1% Southern Planter Class were the true villains - ignoring and usurping the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments which gave freedom and political agency to blacks after the Civil War. The Hayes Compromise of 1877 was what allowed the Planter Class (the rich 1%) to impose vagrancy laws, black codes, and voter suppression of not only the freed blacks but the majority southern white population as well - which gave rise to the debt bondage system called Sharecropping.
Rich southerner Democrats essentially seized back power from the Union post-1877 and created a defacto Neo-Confederate state (just look at their state flags up until 2020 still bearing the Stars and Bars of the Old South).
This system of exploitation, the KKK of which exemplifies, was not so much the suppression of Blacks as a race but the suppression of Republicanism - most of the working class, both Blacks and Whites, were Republicans and it was the KKK's job to intimidate them from voting. They spread propaganda, often through their control of political and religious institutions, that made poor whites view blacks as rivals or an inferior race meant to be subjected, but this wasn't necessarily because they believed it themselves but rather that it was easier to control a socially divided work force (can't have labor unions or strike for better wages if all the workers hate eachother).
The ultimate insult I believe came with the election of Woodrow Wilson, a democrat who oversaw the passage of the 16th Amendment after the Supreme Court had previously declared Federal Income Taxes unconstitutional.
The 16th Amendment made it Constitutional to turn us all into slaves regardless of our race and we are slaves to this day as a result of it, too blind to see it was never about race but of control, the 1% own us, and we are so propogandamized by a tiny ruling elite that we look at race instead of truth.

The goal of unity and understanding between the races should be the paramount objective. And I hate to break it to you but its far longer than 400 years, the African slave trade began the same year Constantinople fell and cut off European access to the Bosphorus straight and the Slavic slave markets of Eastern Europe, that's where the world "slave" comes from. That same year Portuguese traders discovered the west coat of Africa and began a new trade exclusively in blacks.
